How tough are Kershaw blade coatings?

We get this question all the time. I thought I'd share a little story. I sent this blade to STR to have the coating stripped off. I am trying to get a blade tumble finished. He bead blasted it at 120 psi for 20 minutes per side. This is how it ended up looking. It's a little lighter........but that's about it. I guess we can officially tell folks that is is kinda tough :D

And yes that is my dog lending a helping paw.

That's impressive! I've bead blasted holes in beer bottles (the older, thicker returnable ones) in just a minute or two.

DLC FTW!

I would think you would need something harder than glass beads to wear down a Tungsten DLC coating. Carborundum or such maybe.

Definitely some tough stuff!

I use the term bead blasted generically. I'd guess it was more likely aluminum oxide, but, still..........now you tell me.:p

anyone ever try jasco or some form of paint stripper on it? only knives i've ever stripped have been busses, i don't know how different the coatings actually are but jasco worked like a charm on those.

Try Shot Blast.....(yes, Birdshot)
It may strip it better, but it may leave marks you'll havta beadblast out.
The Aluminum medium is probably not abrasive enough or is too fine.

I used to work in a plating shop that specialized in plating aluminum and magnesium in hayward C.A....we'd use beadblast mostly, but we'd use shotblast to take off epoxies and such and THEN use beadblast for final finish.
