How tough are the burl handles on BRKT knives?

Just picked up a beautiful BRKT Bravo 1 with a burl handle. How tough are they?? Can they stand the abuse the blade can? (within reason, not looking to do a destruction test).

Shouldn't be any problem, and if there is is BRKT stands behind their knives with a 110% unconditional warranty.

Enjoy your new knife with no worries.

Nice choice on the Bravo 1

If the burl is colored (blue, green, etc.), it has been stabilized and is essentially a wood-based micarta. (Not technically a micarta, but close enough). In which case, no worries.

If it is natural colored, it may or may not be stabilized - check with your dealer or Mike Stewart to be sure. Either way, Mike wouldn't use it if he wasn't sure it would stand up to real use, and they're fully guaranteed. So no worries.

I have a Desert Ironwood burled B-1 (not stabilized), and I just use it like a micarta handled knife, and have had no issues with it.

Bottom line: use it, no worries!

great buy

barkies are tough..you shoudnt have any problems with it,,barkies have an excellent warranty

IIRC all BRKT burl is stabilized ! As it should be because of the nature of burl.

I'm not an expert, but a couple of different knife makers have told me that Desert Ironwood is so dense it can't be stabilized. The resin won't penetrate.

There are woods that can't be stabilized as the resin reacts with chemicals in the wood or the wood is too dense. There are some that must be stabilized as they are too soft such as spalted wood.In general it's an excellent process.

I buy Barkies of the cheapest Micarta handles available reasoning that they will be 'users'. My Bocote wood Journeyman is my only really pretty handle, everything else being el-cheapo Micarta or G10. It doesn't matter - Barkies are beautiful and demand proper care. All of my Barkies are used - and treated properly - and look nearly new. I would excercise some care - not keep it wet, for example, or leave it in the sunlight, but use it.
