How tough are they really?

Last night I watched a report on Dateline NBC regarding pickup trucks and SUV's about how they are marketed as being tough and able to handle anything that comes their way. They showed that some of the top models got severely damaged when exposed to a 5 mile an hour bump (in a parking lot setting)and were estimated to have very high repair costs.
I began to think about the many knife ads stating how tough they are and how they outperform the competition and wondered if there is anyone out there who has had a bad experience with a knife that was supposed to be tough as nails? Have you had an expensive knife end up not being as tough as the maker or company said it was?
For example:
Lock failure?
Blade chipping?
Weak pivots on folders?
Handles coming apart on fixed blades?

I know anyone can have a bad blade slip by, but if so, was it replaced by the company/maker? And, has it changed your opinion about that company's/maker's knives?

Nope. That's why I buy from Benchmade and Microtech, pretty much exclusively.

P.S., you forgot to mention stop pins, which is an area which is rarely addressed, but can cause failure just as easily as the pivot or lock, if not properly constructed.

Of course, that report neglected to mention that all it really tested was what it costs to repair certain kinds of damage, an insurance issue.

It didn't address safety, reliability or those other issues. Merely how much it would cost in an accumulated total to repair five or so low speed accident types to the same vehicle.

Now how you want to apply that to toughness, I am not really sure.

I've never really have any major problems with my knives, no matter which company it was from.
My biggest gripe about any of my knives is that some of the less well made folders will get scraped up when opened and close, which really annoys the p;ss out of me. I have had problem with some very fine tips on knives bending and even breaking, but I figure that was my own damn fault for not using a drop point or other in those abusive situations.
