How tough is the Manix LW?

I like a full size folder but I don't like the weight. Someone recently told me that the Manix LW's handles were very sturdy (no give) and although they did not have steel liners were very solid. Anyone care to chime in? What are your experience with the knife?

I sold mine when I bought my CruWear Manix because I didn't think I'd carry it before the CruWear sprint, but it felt very sturdy and I'd have no qualms about using it hard.

I've been carrying a LW Manix for a long time. First the BD-1 and now the S110V. They have both gone through a lot of use and abuse. They've been dropped, stepped on and the BD-1 was run over by my UTV in the gravel. Both handles have endured (the BD-1 has some scratches from the UTV incident) and have not cracked or deformed in any way. Nor would I expect them to. The materials are impressive.

The S110V is FRN (fiberglass-reinforced nylon) and the BD-1 is FRCP (Fiberglass reinforced co polymer). Both have a slight amount of give which is actually good. They flex a bit rather than crack. But with this minimal flex is also an amazing amount of strength. It is extremely sturdy and solid. I would expect some of my G10 or natural material handles to give long before the LW handles on either Manix.

Just opinion, of course. But I like the material on both knives and am very impressed with the strength to weight that these materials have.

I'd easily recommend the Manix LW. Until recently it was far and away my favorite EDC. My Yojimbo 2 pushed it into second place, but it is a very fine, very usable knife. Add the S110V and a reasonable price tag, and the Manix 2 is very, very hard to beat.

To me, the frn on the s110v model looks and feels tougher than the frcp on he bd1 model. I have no idea if one is actually tougher than the other but I much prefer the feel of the frn.

They are apparently very tough, and they do have small liners that reinforce the pivot area. When the S110V version came out people wanted to swap that blade into G10 Manix versions, and they found that unless they just drilled out the rivets, they had to go to a lot of trouble to pretty much destroy the FRN handles to get the blade out. It would come out easily.

And BTW they are real interesting knives. I did not have any interest in one until I had the chance to handle one, then I wanted one. About that time the S110V version was announced so I bought one of those.

I cannot find where I read it, but Sal said that FRCP is stronger then FRN. But I will admit that FRCP feels like plastic.

Someone broke a blade and the handles stayed together. Don't remember who or where I saw it, but it will probably surface.

It seems there are no need to add my 2 cents ;) But, I would like to share a story.

I swapped the blade between S110V FRN and G10 Full liner S30V. My point is that after finding actual bolt to hold, FRN with S30V is holding together like if is right out of the factory. Their inner molds fit together very assuredly and only reason it doesn't come apart readily.

Hey bluemetalchurch, was that you I was telling about my brother's Manix 2 LW on Facebook the other day? Small world haha
