How tough is the Tiger Shark?

First, let me say I'm new to SOG. I've never had any luck as far as handling any models in knife stores. They seem to have every model but SOG, or they just sold out. I've always wanted to try one out.

I've been looking at the Tiger shark model for a tough camp knife. I don't really have any big fixed blades, and I've got enough smaller fixed blades(a busse, a swamprat, and a custom) to last me. I've read that SOG does a good thing with Aus-6 and makes it tougher.

So what do you all think? A tiger shark for a tough outdoors knife? Tough steel?

The Tigershark is definitely a tough knife, but there are a couple of things that i didn't like that drove me to something else for a camp knife.
1. Serrations. I don't mind them on some smaller blades like folders but not on a large blade.
2. The Kraton handle. Although comfortable, i prefer a more solid feel.
3. Weight. Although a good chopper, it's not a great one as it could use a bit more weight behind it.

I never minded the steel myself, I prefer the AUS8 to the AUS6 but it does hold a decent edge and is relatively easy to sharpen.

Just my 2cents worth.

Cheers!

I'm fortunate to have an older model Tigershark with SK-5 carbon steel and no serrations. Sharpens to a fantastic razory edge.

I've beat the crap out of it on several occasions while chopping big tree limbs and such ..... I even tried (not on purpose, mind you) to chop a big granite boulder. It chops great, no vibration in my hand.

I haven't broken it yet, and wouldn't trade it for anything. And if I break it, hey, I'll just get another one.

Cheers,

Carl

go with the tigershark I have 8 of them 4 aus6 serrated, 2 aus6 plain edge, 2 sk5 plain edge. I love them they are great knives.

Eight of them?

Jeeeeez... Here I thought I was a SOG junkie with Pentagons and redundant Pentagons, etc.

Anyway, if you're interested in buying a Tigershark, you picked a great time to do it. There's one on eBay with the good SOG factory leather sheath, not the kydex. Check auction numbah 180075513621.

its aus6 wih serations but a leather sheath. I prefer kydex on the newer style and leather on the older.

not to hijack your thread but,...

are the older sog tigersharks that say 440A stainless is that the same as Aus6 or aus8?
I saw an add for one with a leather sheath no serration in 440A
THanks

how can you identify the tigershark as having sk-5 steel?

I read the history of the tigershark posted here on the archives and if i remember correctly the steel was changed first, then they added the coating, and finally the serrations... correct me if i'm wrong...

Near as I can follow the trail: it started as SK-5 carbon steel, then to AUS-6 stainless steel with no serrations, then to the current config.
I seem to recall a year or so where the blade was stainless steel with a coating, but no serrations.

Cheers,

Carl
