How ugly are these 1911 grips?

Ok, I found these grips, and had to have them. After getting them home I am trying to figure out why the hell I bought them. Whats your opinion? Keep em, or scrap em?

If you keep them you shall forever be known as "The Cheesy Rattler Grip Guy". Scrap 'em and buy some of Rob Simonichs grips.

That about sums it up, and what did I expect for $10.00. I've had my eye on a set of Rob's grips, and I wouldn't mind having a set of black Micarta grips either.

I like the pimp gun look.

Aaron Hogue would be pissed if he saw what someone has done to a set of his (Hogue) grips. Toss those out and get a set of Hogue rubber grips on that .45.

A lot of my friends put some really gaudy grips on their 1911's. I have a pair of Ajax ivory grips on my Colt Government .380 ACP. I have a bright red rosewood pair from Jack Breskovich on my Colt Enhanced.

Some of the toughest Texas Rangers written about in historical pieces in gun magazines had engraved, nickeled 1911's with white ivory grips. I don't see a problem.

The grips themselves look fine; but (in my opinion as an artist..)
The snake just don't cut it. I suppose they were going for the colored-scrimshaw look...but it's just kind of garby.

Now...real scrimshaw work, on some toned-down fossil ivory...might be nice.

I'll take those fugly grips off your hands for $10.00, just leave them on the gun....;)

They are nice, just not my cup of tea, neither are the MOP. I like the Carbon Fiber grips, some nice fingergrooved exotic wood or just the standard wraparound houge grips

Honestly, they do appear to be a set of Hogue Wraparound grips. They are clearly made form a nice hunk of wood, maybe Rosewood or probably Cocobolo. I just think (as you seem to) that the snake medallion is pretty corny. Perhaps you could have someone remove the snakes and replace them with something else, as mwerner suggests. It might be worthwhile. I don't personally think any sort of medallion ever really looks nice, but that's just my personal taste. I have handled 1911's with those type of Hogue grips before and they are very comfy and secure.

Good luck with 'em.

Actually, it's not the snake that bothers me as much as it bothers some of you.

Those unchecked and polished wrap-around grips do two things, both of them bad. First, it makes the girth of the grip larger; many gunsmiths thin the frame as Jeff Cooper once suggested. Secondly, the front area is polished; it's the front and back strap that keep the firearm from 'rocking' in your grasp. Checkering would be a better idea.

Some what about the snake? I've seen flags, dice, skeletons, silver inlays, nekkid women, coins and every species of animal you can think of. Maybe a better rendition is needed.
