The show went way beyond my expectations! It was a real treat to actually meet some of my favorite knife makers and check out knives I had never previously handled. Unfortunately, I quit my job a couple of weeks ago without the foresight to put aside some money for knives - very bad move. I was also a little taken back by just what a friendly and classy group of people these knife knuts are. Some of my favorites were: Newt Livesay and Ray Ellingson, Will Fennell, Ed Caffrey, Mike & Audra Draper, Michael Bell, Ed Fowler, the whole Crucible table, Ben Dale (Edgepro maker), Bernard Levine, Chris Reeve and Chuck Gollnick. Chuck and Clay's demo was great and seemed to draw a fairly large audience - I really enjoyed the monster butterfly knife Chuck showed at the end of the demonstration. There was also a martial arts / knife fighting demo put on by Kelly Worden and Ray Ellingson that immediately followed. This show was very impressive and in some ways scared the hell out of me - these guys are BAD! Got me all pumped up to get some training - any suggestions for here in the Portland area? As for the knives that really impressed me - well, I think all of them would fall into this category but here are a few:
Ed Caffreys Knives - one of his large bowies was my favorite of the show, absolutely incredible workmanship, appearance and feel.
Mad Dog Panther - I had never handled a MD knife but have read most all the forum threads and was a little negative on MD going in. I swear this knife spoke to me once it was firmly in my grip, I had never felt so cool as when holding this thing. Sure $900.00 is way, way too much for it (Mr. Caffrey's incredible damascus bowie was the same price) but I want one anyway.
Benchmade Balisong Mod 42 - I am not a butterfly knife fan per se, but this is one I am buying for sure. Light as can be and very nice workmanship and materials.
Chris Reeve Knives - Everything about these knives, and his table for that matter, seemed absolutely tidy and perfect. Makes me wonder if a knife has ever left his factory with an uneven bevel, dull or with any kind of imperfection. I now understand the Sebenza threads.
Becker Knife and Tool Campanion and Brute - pictures do not do these knives justice they are BEEFY. Very impressive fit and finish and an incredible price. I can hardly wait for a Brute vs. Cliff Stamp matchup!
I only wish I could have stayed for Sundays show as I needed more time to take it all in again and would have liked to see the rope cutting contest. The only dissapointment of the show is that I could not find a Busse Battle Mistress to take a look at (another of those knives I have only read about, I have a basic 7). In fact I did not see a single Busse at the show - what is up with that? Well, I better stop and get job hunting, my knife wants have just gone into orbit!
