How wear-resistant is G-10? (re: folders)

How long-wearing do you guys think G-10 would be in contact with a metal pin, like the thumbstud/stop pins that Ken Onion put on the Kershaw Speed-Safes?

I'm playing with some folder designs and if I can avoid using liners, I will. I'm also wondering how the G-10 would fare in sliding friction, like say, against a ball detent. I know it's plastic, but I also know that the fiberglass wears cutting tools really fast, so my question stands.

I think the most logical solution is to make the knife as per your design and send it to me for testing! :D

:D Seriously, though, I would think that using G-10 or Micarta for the stop pin to hit against would probably not be all that great of an idea. Maybe if you have a nested stop pin, and you have the blade thumb thingie hitting the scale as above, you could distribute some of the pressure around a bit, but I have a feeling it would be less than satisfactory. That said, I don't know that it's been done, so I honestly think you'd just have to prototype it and see what happens. Is this a friction folder design? I don't think G-10 makes good liner lock material! :D

In a design like that, the stud must contact solid metal. G10 wouldn't hold up at all. Why not use a metal bolster for the stop? Or better yet, Ti liners.

Good ideas, but one of my goals here is to minimize the number of parts. That said, the answer may be to simply use Ti for the whole scale.

Thanks, guys.

You could do it like a Strider SMF or SnG and use thick titanium for the lock side and whatever else for the other side (they use G-10). Since they're the only people I know of doing knives like that it would probably pay to email Mick or Duane and just clear it with them, since it's sort of "their thing." can't wait to see what you come up with!

I can't wait to show you! I think it's a cool concept and it's inspired by (though not at all based on) that beauty you use as an avatar, Chiro. :D
