Considering a Columbia River M-18 as soon as they become available. How well does the L.A.W.K.S. work?

Engaged, it physically stops the liner from moving aside. The only possible way it could fail would be if the gap between the engaged LAWKS and the blade tang was wide enough to permit the liner to slip past the tang.

I owned a CRKT Kasper and a Point Guard, both with LAWKS. The knives never failed with the LAWKS engaged...they would fail every time without it engaged though. However, if you don't use a saber grip, where your tumb is right behind the LAWKS, I guess it could become disengaged. This has never happened to me, so I don't think you have any thing to worry about.

as long as ya use a sabre grip they work great imho, but some CRKT's wont lock w/out it (not very well anyway) i think w/a CRKT i would really want the lawks.........

First of all I want to say that I own five CRK&T folders and none of these has caused problems regarding the lock. Maybe a fortunate coincidence but this is my experience.
Concerning the LAWKS mechanism I think there are two thinkable weaknesses.
An unintended disengagement of the LAWKS lock lever or the liner slips to the right outside the blade tang.
I think an unintended disengagement of the too much smooth-running aligned LAWKS lock lever by CRK&T is out of question if you tighten the pivot screw a little more.
