How well does the MS chop?

After this trip, I'm not sure I will need a camp tramp. Mostly cause I won't be able to get out and use for months, and I hate for it to just sit there. Would like to replace it with a blade size I can use.....like the MS. Was wondering though how well it chops? I wouldn't want to get rid of the CT and learn the can't chop well. Kind of narrowing it down to an all around size since the MS is my ideal size. Then what I carry will be: Mean streets. All the time, everyday, everywhere. How well is it as a camp knife?

Well, I have no experience...but seeing how the MS's blade is the length and width of your finger I wouldn't expect it to be a "chopper" unless you're chopping pasta

I wouldn't consider the MS a chopper either but, given the strength of the steel, I think you could "slice" through any branch less than a few inches in diameter by bending the branch with your free hand and then using a sawing motion with the blade at the part of the branch under tension.

If you do it right it can be surprising just how large a branch a small blade can cut through. If you can bend it you can most likely cut it with the MS. Myself, I'd still take a bigger blade for clearing brush any day though!

the mrs will not chop very well imo.

with that being said however i would still get the mrs for a edc/camp knife. get a swiss army knife with a saw and you will still be in business and besides with a wood baton you can still cut through big chunks of wood very effectively.

doug ritter uses a baton on his benchmade rsk folder and cuts through wood so with a fixed blade there is no worry of lock failure.

right. what they said.

I think it is to small to be an efficiant chopper. Not terrible and with determination it would work, but it won't stand up if you compare it to the CT.

It's true that the CT can do darn near anything...anything but be a good EDC. Unless you live out in the woods..

I have blades set apart by catagory. Some for edc some for camping some for hunting...

Of course I have an illness.... :D

I DO have experience and DN is pretty much on the mark. However, you CAN baton the hell out of them, or, at least I do with my older 1/4" MS. This is when I've got the smoker fired up and need to split a chunk of hickory and too lazy to get the Tramp. Whatever's on my belt, either the MS, an AD or a SHBA. Got a big rubber mallet next to the smoker and gashes in the concrete from the INFI or SR-101.

I agree with Rob, if your out in the bush and need to chop wood you can always batten the daylights out of it with a lump of wood to get you by.

But for specific use as a chopper in the scub, definitely go with the CT or a NO sized knife, or larger.

Ian.
