how well made are older AL MAR knifes

Out of curiosity, what prompts this question? Are you looking at a particular older Al Mar over a Spyderco or Benchmade? My only Al Mar is from around 1998 or 1999. It is a SERE 2000. It is by far my favorite knife. Smooth as butter. Silkier than my new Sebenza. Great heat treat on the VG10. Been looking at picking up their SLB.

I don't know much about older Al Mar knives, but the new ones are great. I think they could stand to update the steel that they use, but their quality is great.

I have a couple of Ultralights and an SLB from 2000 or 2001. They are top notch. The AUS8 blades have held up well and have good cutting geometry. All of them see a lot of edc time. The fit and finish are excellent as well as the ergonomics.

sqoon- I like my SLB a lot. The lines of the knife seem to flow very nicely when it is both open and closed. That is one of the reasons I like it.

Need to know the model, Al Mar did have a few budget models, although those were excellent quality too. In general, Al Mar would've been easily in the top 3 production brands you could buy in terms of fit and finish during the 80's and 90's.

Thanks for your help, I have enjoyed my Benchmade knifes in the past just wanted to know how the Al Mar would rate compared. The Al Mar is a hawk, smaller pocket knife nice looking and lite will be getting it today.

I think you'll like it. You'll be surprised how much blade (length) they fit into the handle. The blade is thin, so it makes an excellent slicer. The Hawk is very thin and light, so I hardly notice it in my pocket. Good choice, I hope you like it as much as I do.

I think it looks nice enough to be in my pocket when I have to wear a suit and tie. I did add a pocket clip to mine so it can ride in the inside breast pocket or double as a tie clip :D.
