how would I get started?

I love knives and guns (for utility purposes and sport). I would like to learn more about Khurkuris and perhaps buy one or several at some point.

I am intrigued. What do you advise me to do?

More about me: I love hiking and cooking. I practice with a Glock about once per month. Never hunted but interested in it. I have a Sebenza, a few Striders, some larger quality production folders and a Fallkniven coming soon. I love to read and research things, too.

I would love to hear your ideas on where I might learn more and what I should consider acquiring. Thank you!

First of all, you've found the mother-load of khukuri knowledge and opinion. :D Welcome to the cantina. You won't find a more generous bunch of folks anywhere. The most easily accessible source of HUGE amounts of khukuri lore is the HI website. Take a few days off work and dig in.
Then hang out here and don't be shy about asking questions. A lot of argot and abbreviations gets used and it can be confusing at first. :(

Bruise, as usual, got it right with 1 sentence.

Welcome! Bruise gave some good advice. I'd also spend some time reading this forum, as well as the HI archive. Lots of good stuff there. Asking questions here is a great way to learn as well. You'll find that most folks here are pretty enthusiastic about HI khukuris, and that's putting it mildly ;). If you decide to buy a khukuri, keep an eye out for Uncle Bill's special deals, which usually get posted mid-morning or early afternoon. Good starter khukuris include the BAS and the 16.5" WWII. If you are looking for something a little larger, the 18" Ang Khola is quite a knife.

Welcome.

You'll start to get an idea of what will suit you and you'll buy one. Then some of your ideas will most likely change.

Best thing is to buy one. Thats what I did. They are absolutely great quality and chop/cut excellently. You won't regret it.

Everyone here is going to sound off about "the perfect khuk."

Problem is, they're all right. :)

Grab one. If you appreciate quality (and you hinted at it by mentioning Glocks and Sebenzas), you'll enjoy it.

You already have. Welcome to the Psycho Ward/Cantina.:D

If you want us to expound on what sort of khukuri you should get then we need to know what use you're gonna put it too.
Your requirements may need anything from a Kagnas Katne to a Huge Ganga Ram Special or something in between of which there are literally countless numbers Or,
several different ones.:p ;)

Welcome!

Since you like to hike and to cook (2 hobbies we have in common ;)) I would recommend the 12" AK, Sirupati or Pen Knife. All are very "packable"....if you want something smaller and have the extra bucks....get a 10" BDC. They are oh-so-nice.....and all are handy in the kitchen.

If you want to start small - get a 9" Bilton - we use ours in the kitchen all the time. In fact, a Sgt. Karka Bilton would be the way to go - nice handle, cool sheath.

Thanks! You make me very welcome and I really appreciate it. I purchased a 15" Sirupati tonight.

When I get it, I will think about something else, probably a bit larger...oh boy, this is gonna get expensive  :D

You have no idea. But it is great fun :) A "little" sirupati is a great choice for a first khukuri. BTW, the term "little" around here means something less than a full-size battle sword ;) You ARE going to like it and then wonder about how much you might like other patterns... and then.... You have a case of HIKV. My sympathy to your loved ones
;)

To clarify for Bri in Chi, HIKV is Himalayan Import Khukuri Virus. It's ferocious! :D

Welcome! What are you after primarily? Chopper? Fighter? Cooker? Ultimate all-around chopper, dismemberer? (That's all HIs.)

By the way, this addiction can be made less expensive if you check this forum every day. Uncle Bill regularly posts deals of the day here. High-quality stuff for great prices!

Welcome again, friend!

Be advised that HIKV* is spread by contact with HI khukris. And maybe thru the forum. But who cares? There's a rush with each new khuk. They aren't made like mass produced knives and may not look at first glance like you'd expect, but they are hand forged one at a time by very skilled artisans. And if you are lucky and listen to your new khuk it may begin to speak to you. The kami's sweat and blood put into it's making seems to impart a spirit that can be experienced.

One of my favorites is a 15" Sirupati that cracked it's handle horribly and was rehandled by the owner of HI ( Pala ) while he was visiting here in Reno. I remember him each time I touch it.

I too just ordered my 1st Khukuri the other day; a 17" chiruwa AK :D

I'm already thinking about what my next Khuk should be... :(

Is this HIKV?
If so, what have I gotten myself in to?

There should be a warning and a disclaimer on the site!

We really should inform the CDC. :D

New Guys?

1. Don't buy any. Send what you have back, or to me or Bruise, who lives in the Yukon Territories in house-arrest for the next 7 months, or until the bear forgives him.

2. Delete the Cantina, Forum, whatever...from your list of favorites.

3. Find the nearest "Justificator's Anonymous" meetings, and sign up immediately. Attend faithfully.

4. Do not learn more. Knowledge is dangerous. Ignorance is bliss.

My best wishes.

I was talking to my wife last night on a walk about the concept of authenticity. We in the US and the rest of the Western world run into so many mass produced items and we crave things that are authentic, have a history, are made by real people we can visualize. I can see that Khukris are authentic and that means an awful lot.

Thanks again for the warm welcome. I don't think you have discouraged me yet with your talks of quarantines, viruses, fleas, pestilence, bats, rats and plague :D
