How would one go about replacing washers?

I just got a CRKT Squid in the mail and I love it, except for the fact that the action on the teflon washers isn't satisfactory. I'm hoping to replace them with phosphor bronze washers.

I know how to disassemble and reassemble a knife and all that, but I've never replaced washers with another set of washers. How do I know if the washers I purchase will fit the knife? Are there different sizes of washers?

Sorry if this is a dumb question :o

A set of calipers would make measuring the thickness and inside/out diameter easy

once you have calipers and you have the right measurements!you can order from USA.knifemaker supply.com as they stock all this good stuff.

Bronze phosphorous washers are pretty inexpensive, less than a dollar a pair. So if you can't determine the precise size of the washers in your knife you could always buy a variety of sizes and thicknesses and try different ones.

You can narrow it down by using a good ruler to measure across the outer width of the washer, and across the inner hole of the washer. Washers are available in a variety of thicknesses. The difference in the thicknesses are slight, so buying a variety can allow you to create a custom fitted pivot.

I have bought bp washers from both USA Knife Maker Supply and Knifekits.com. Knifekits has one size of bp washer that USA Knife Maker doesn't sell (3/16" hole, .5" outer diameter, .020" thick).

Thanks, I'll see if I can find some calipers and if I can't I'll do your suggestion, killgar

I put a set of Paramilitary 2 washers in my Tenacious.

Now you can't see the washers through the holes for the clip.

Did you ever figure this out? If so, I'd be interested to know what you ended up using. I'm thinking of doing the same thing.

I just did the lazy thing and got used to the action. Sorry I couldn't help...

Get out the calipers and take measurements.

The knifemaker supply stores have all sorts of PB washers in all the sizes. Awhile ago I picked up about a dozen of every single size I could order, and that's served me well.

A good replacement if sometimes hard to size exactly perfectly, so they do make incremental .005" washers you can use to dial it in just right.

Don't overlook Nylatron washers either, I find they work pretty well as replacements for the standard white nylon ones.

One of my smoothest knives is on teflon washers. Hard to believe it could get any better with PB.
