I am thinking about picking this up for $20 and using it for a heat treating forge.

Any reason not too? I already have a pyrometer and am planining on picking up some kaowool and firebrick from Laguna Clay. I need to find a steel pipe for a muffle any ideas where I can find a short section of pipe for the muffle?

My local Home Depot, TSC and hardware stores a rack of black pipe nipples like this:

why not just go to a place that sells steel pipe and get yourself a foot of 10 or 12 inch pipe a foot long? it would be easier, heavier duty and while your there get the pieces for the legs, shelf, handle, and holder for the burner? i think you might be happier going this route than taking the time to do all the modifications.

no matter what you decide good luck to you

Most all the places around here that sell pipe are going to look at you funny if you ask for a 1' piece. They'd much rather sell you a 22' section. IF the shop has an area in the back with drops, then that's another story.

My recommendation is look in the phone book for a pipe-line maintenance outfit. Usually a guy will gladly give you something like a 3' chunk, so long as you ask nicely. Especially if you talk to a pipe welder... most of those type guys think something like making a knife or forge is cool.

Buying an air tank for $20 and having to cut it down and strip the paint seems like a lot of steps/costs that aren't required. :)

I do the same thing you're talking about with free old propane tanks, but they're a bit more hassle then the air tank you're looking at. A little tip for stripping the paint you might want to try. Once you have the ends cut off (use a wrap around or something similar to create straight lines) Set it up on end, pile charcoal briquettes in it and light them up. Once they're burned out just about all the paint will be gone too. Then just take a flap sander or wire wheel on an angle grinder to it to dress it up. Geesh, the pipe for a muffle and/or collar for the burner should be easy enough. Even Home Depot and Lowes type stores usually carry it. If not, a plumber supply for sure would have it. Even 2" by 12" nipples would probably do.

Anyone who sells pipe sells it by the foot, pipefitters buy 1' slugs for threading nipples all the time I've never had a steel supplier say they won't sell it but there will prob be a cut fee.
