How would you classify this blade shape (Lightfoot Custom) >>

My new Greg Lightfoot Max Velocity. Just curious what you'd call the blade shape. I've always had a hard time classifying blade styles with the exception of Wharncliffe and Sheepsfoot blades, those are about the only ones I get right :)

I would humbly submit that that's a drop point - in that the spine from stud to tip appears to be ever so slightly convex. It compares largely to the modified-drop-point Griptilian 551.

One could argue that it's a clip point - I've heard that a clip can be either straight or concave on the spine. However, I usually consider a clip point to be something like a Buck 110 or a CS Voyager.

Well, what are the blade options for tactical folders. . .

persian
clip point
drop point
spearpoint
skinner
wharncliff
sheepsfoot
hawksbill
tanto
reverse tanto
dagger
bowie
leaf
trailing point

Well, that's all I can think of, and this doesn't seem to fit any of those! I can't see calling it a drop point, b/c the spine looks like it runs straight to the point w/o dropping down. Curious. What does Greg call it?

I agree with fishface that it doesn't seem to neatly fit any of the standard blade shapes. That's probably the whole reason people make custom blades, though -- building a better mousetrap. That said, I think it's closest to a clip-point.

I'd say drop. If we were to get nit-picky, I'd say put a straight edge along the spine and see what happens. Personally, I think you get a clip point from 'clipping' a section of the profile from the blade, showing a sharp deviation from the line of the spine somewhere near the tip. Drop points are a smooth curvature of the line.

I classify it as a "good excuse to show off my new knife" blade shape. Nice knife.

ok, ok you caught me :) but in all seriousness, I was thinking some sort of drop point, but that's a *very* undeducated guess at best. I like how 'modified' drop point sounds, that may fit the bill.

As to what Greg calls it, I don't know. His website doesn't provide any info, nor did the retailer's site (bladeart). Thanks for the help, guys. I'll keep an eye out for a similar blade shape in my online travels...

I couldn't say without a flat perspective shot with the blade open. If the point is at the same level with the spine where it meets the handle it is a simple "strait blade".

I don't know what to call the blade shape but I will say that the knife is awesome.:)

It looks like a Max Velocity... looks like a very subtle drop point combined with a traditional Japanese tanto-ish high hollow ground...

I drew a line to help show the drop in the blade. Would this lead you all to believe it is a drop point? Nice knife BTW. :)

Got my Max Velocity in front of me and would say drop point. Heck of a nice knife. Fit and Finish is amazing. My first custom folder and I would not hesitate to buy another of Mr. Lightfoots knives. Take Care!!!

With no more belly than it has I would call it a clip point without the clip! I would also call it one cool knife!! :D

Hi CKE, it's my first custom folder as well. I agonized for weeks over which knife to buy. My budget was in the $500 range and I knew the style I wanted, cf & titanium. So with such vague criteria, I had way too many choices. In the end, the Lightfoot won out and I'm real happy with the decision, I received it on wednesday of this week.

The only negative is that now I start looking at customs as if I could actually buy another

I think you posted the question just to make us jealous and show off your new knife!!!!!

What a beauty...i've always liked Lightfoot's designs....

Too bad i can't afford 'em...

What hit me first was how the blade shape looked almost exactly like my mini-griptilian...Benchmade calls it a drop-point...so i guess it must be...hehehe

No kidding patrick. I am looking at Striders now. Got two custom Canadian makers knives and love them. Other is a Tichbourne. But the Striders are very beefy/user looking. Although I have no doubts the Max would stand up to some substantial use. Take Care and enjoy the Lightfoot!!!

patrick, if you're not married, hurry up & collect your customs at the quickest rate possible. being married requires a special "wife approval trial" that you must pass with every purchase of a new expensive custom, and sometimes the trials take weeks or months! wives have muscles they can choose to flex (or not, then life really sucks), and their power is formidable :D
