How would you display your HI knives?

I am working on designs for wall hanging display cases so that I can enjoy looking at my HI knives when I am not busy using them. Some, like the two Prince knives, may be more permanent display pieces. I am planning for some unique peices to have their own cases while others may be shown in groupings.

I am seeking opinions on some aspects of the display...

Would you display the knives with or without their sheaths (just standard sheaths so far)?

Would you use a wood background?

Would you use a green felt background?

Has anyone tried the foam with knives pressed in by the lid?

Does anyone have thoughts on what the knives should be supported on in the case such as wood versus some other material?

Just curious what other forumites think or might have done.

I've been thinking about the same thing. I'm thinking wood with hidden rare earth magnets... We'll see how we'll it works.

I like the way they look in my hand too much to envision them on a rack:jerkit: Maybe more like an umbrella holder by the front door:rolleyes:

Unfortunately, Display and storage topics here seem to be sparse. I know at least one member who keeps his in a bucket, but there are older threads in the archives where members have built quite nice light box style displays of various construction and topics about stands.
I myself keep the best well oiled and in a drawer, away from prying eyes and dust. My users and ones i want to keep near usually get a tack or screw in the wall to hang from.

Heres a couple topics i found on the subject though:

Thanks Karda. I had seen those threads and while they do show a lot of interesting options they were not quite what I was looking for. Still there are the seeds of some ideas amongst all those pictures.

I think I am heading toward building some enclosed wood cases with hinged picture frame looking fronts with either glass or lexan. I would make them locking to keep the grandchildren from casually getting into them.

I know that lots of people prefer to keep them hidden away or with the tools and such but I want to enjoy them when not in use and my collection will still be quite safe.

Here's a pic of an in-sheath display that's pretty secure/safe yet still allows for removal of the blade:

I also built one of the "Steve Ferguson" racks (with 3/4" dowels) from a Svashtar post in the first thread linked by Karda above. I angled the dowels up at about 15-20 degrees to prevent the frogs from slipping off which makes it secure enough to mount over my dresser. This is more utility storage than "display" but once the rack is filled up it looks pretty good overall.

I store my Kukris similar to Karda but sometimes I put a Kukri I am working on, on top of the container (see photo below) and display it for a week. But I think hanging your Kukris on the wall is nicer and much safer than what I do.
