How Would You Heat Treat This Blade?

Hi Guys,

I'm making a Marbles Ideal 7, you know, one of the old timey classics. It has a huge fuller, which I've ground in pre-Ht, I haven't measured the thickness in that area, but it's pretty thin. I'm thinking of putting some clay in that area for protection, or perhaps using a muffler. In looking at the 1084 blade, I'm worried what will happen during Ht. Looking for ideas.

Cool blade!
Other than avoiding brine or water for the quench I can't offer much more advise. My guess is that it will be fine. Good luck!

With all that grinding I'd first give it a stress relief temper at 1200 F to minimize warping. Then on to HT and quenching in oil not water or brine as Bruce suggests.

I would give the blade a wash coat of satanite, do a normalization/stress relief cycle, and run the HT as normal. Quench in fast oil.

Did the ash get there yesterday afternoon?

Yes, sure did. And looks good, too. Looking forward to mounting it on a nice spear.

Thanks guys, for the sound advice.
