How would YOU redesign the Umfaan

If you where redesigning the Umfaan, what would you do? Here's what I would do:

- Keep length dimension, but up the material thickness to that of the small sebenza.

- Make it a wharnecliff blade.

- Make a threaded pocket clip so it can be tip up/down/right/left interchangeable.

- Make a two or three finger handle cutout, not as radical as the Spyderco Dodo, but maybe more like the Spyderco navigator.

- Consider a new opening device, perhaps a milled indent, like Boye folders.

great idea for a thread, although i hazard the CRK and co already have a pretty good idea what they wanna do with the Umfaan. but here is what i would LOVE to see:

-POCKET CLIP!!!! i cannot carry a knife without a clip! see: Mnandi!!

-make the handle about 3-5mm longer and incorporate some slight choils/cutouts for better hand feel and leverage

-blade choice of classic Umfaan and offer a Wharncliff!!!

-increase the choil cutout (a la Classic Sebbie) so that access to the thumblug is greater

-make a lot, as i have always had a real big spot in my heart and collection for the greatest of small knives!

As soon as I saw the title of this thread I thought: Wharncliffe. That would be an awesome modification. It could be standard or an option I don't care just give me one. Also add a clip for tip up carry as with the Sebbie and Mnandi.

I've never tried a Umfaan, but I do own a Mnandi and I love it. Didn't the Mnandi replace the Umfaan? I emailed CRK about the my idea for a wharncliffe Mnandi, but wharncliffe Umfaan sounds good too I guess :)

No the Mnandi did not replace the Umfaan. They had parallel runs for a time before production of the Umfaan was halted. The Umfaan is coming back in an updated version at some point in the hopefully not to distant future. BTW, I agree a Wharncliffe Mnandi would make an excellent knife.

How would I improve the Umfaan?...
Do away with the thumb-lug and give it the recess of the Mnandi.
A wharncliffe blade would be nice.

I would add some of the features of the Mnandi including the opening nick and pocket clip. A wood inlay would be cool to! I love the size of this folder.
Other then that I think it is a perfect folder.

I like the Warncliff also! How about polished handles instead of 'washed'?

I'd make it more "classic 2000" style... other than that umfaan is great little user :) And please, leave it clipless...

Why are some folks resistant to the idea of the Umfaan being fitted with a clip? I'm not trying to start anything, I'm just curious. I think the presence of a clip allows for much easier access and it keeps the knife from getting scuffed/scratched by the rest of the pocket's contents. Yes I know it can be kept in a pouch but I'm not crazy about them. The lack of a clip has kept me from getting an Umfaan to date not to mention a couple of WH's as well. Again not trying to start anything just asking a question and stating an opinion.

It's probably one of those chocolate versus vanilla arguments. The first thing I do on a new folder is take off the clip--I think they interfere with the grip too much and I want it to be down in my pocket so it doesn't get bumped out by something brushing against a clip.

I like the idea of the option of having or not having a clip, but with clip holes covered--that's what I have on my sebies (course it would have been nice not to have to had paid extra for the cover---should be able to trade the clip for it)
