I am seriously considering starting a knife manufacturing Co. and could use some trusted advice. I am narrowing down my list and this is what I have so far.
Steel: 1/4 or 3/16"
1095(With Coating?)
440c
ATS34
Handles
Black Linen Micarta
Fasteners
Torque Heads
Going to start off with my own designs in fixed blade Tacticals.
Advertise in Blade(of course!)
Knives Illus., Tactical knives, Where else?

If you were me what would you do?

hire some experienced cutlers to do the manufacturing, unless you have the skills to do it yourself.

Well, first...you'd want to win the lottery, or ask Uncle Bill (Gates) for an allowance...

Do some market research first. Determine what the demographics are for the market you are trying to reach. Then study the competition, which is already in the market, and see if you can fill a huge void or just a small niche. "Me to" companies fail pretty quickly especially if you are going against much larger competitors who are more financially sound.

There is a lot more to learn than could ever be said in a forum. Good luck

Thanks all of you. What would be the best way of conducting a market survey for the Tactical knife arena?
Best way to get hold of the military personnel, police, search and rescue, fire dept. market?
You are right that is a really broad question to expect a complete overview answer.

I'd try to advertise here. There are over 4,000 members (and growing!), so that's a pretty good amount of "hits" a day. How big do you want this to be? A one-man operation? A small company? HUGE? That will be a big part of your company's identity, therefore being important in your advertising etc.

Howie

Thanks Howie, I am looking at a small Co to start probably 1-2 employees the first few years. Plans, at least goals are to go no more than 10 employees.
Any suggestions on publications to advertise in, geared toward the military, police or rescue personnel market?
Any help is appreciated.

I will be advertising on Blade Forum for sure. Not only is it a good market but the people are top notch. There are a few Nasayers but 99% are more than willing to help with heartfelt advice! Hard to find these days so it is appreciated even more.
Thanks
