I have a bunch of knives but some are just mine. I can’t really explain it, but certain knives have a close place in my heart for many different reasons. They may have been gifts, maybe they have a significant serial number or date, they were bought under unique circumstances, etc.. Certain knives give me that feeling that things are just right when I pick them up. I’m sure some of you know what I’m talking about

The poll needs an "All of the above". :D I usually check all the boxes within the first day or two.

^^^^ This. Plus the life experiences I had with them, and the dings I proudly made myself.

From buying them to rescuing them from neglect, once a knife is under my care, they are mine. Only to be gifted, rarely sold. They are, sharpened, scratched, dropped, disassembled, draw blood, an cut with.

How? I considered mine when it takes a huge sliver out of my thumb while it drop shut on closing....

First, I have to mod them. These two have scales with my son's birthday and the Duncan clan motto.

Second, I must slay savage beasts to acquire them (somehow done after the modding...) Notice the two wild devils that I conquered for these.

I dunno. Sometimes all I have to do is take it in my hand and we are one. Other knives, I never do 'bond' with. Nice knives, but there is no connection.

Got some knives in the safe that still have factory edge (Sebenza 21 Mammoth Ivory and a couple Hinderer's). Then there are my EDC knives that don't last 24 hours here without getting my edge. They are the "keepers"...

I purchase it and it's mine unless I decide otherwise.
I will say however that I really only cut myself when fondling and admiring my knives, so if I cut myself I probably like it enough to have already considered it a keeper.
