There has been 3 generations of Howlers the latest(3rd) being the LM correct? What's the difference between Gen 1 and Gen 2?

The first and second gen, primarily, saw a difference in choil size. I've got a 1st gen... smaller choil. Pictured below.

In addition, there were some variations in the Howler grind in both the first and second - some were saber, some flat. I think there were flat and saber in both the large and small choil. I don't recall the exact lineage, with the grinds, but do a search for 360Joules... he listed them all at one point.

Eli-

That is one of the original Master Series Dog Skinners. The idea was some production pieces were "finished" by a master bladesmith. In all honesty, it is one of the cleanest Rats I ever received. The micarta edges are polished to a fine luster.

I would really love to see the Dog Skinners return in some configuration. In addition to the Master's Series, there was also an Extravaganza Dog Skinner from the Custom Shop. It had both black and tan micarta alternating on the grip. The grip is contoured similar to, but much thinner than, a mag grip like on a SF or F grip. I had it it Blade - I don't recall whether you saw it or not.

The ones with serrations are all 2nd gen plus you can also find the bandcutter version. Last but not least, don't forget the colors. You also have a tan version for both generations and if I remember correctly 360Joules mentioned that you had both grind lines in each generation. Common is the saber grind, everything else seems to be pretty rare.

Lets not leave out the Fat Girls....Howling Fat......1/4 SR 101 goodness. Flat Grind

My boy T-dog is on an HR kick of late. He knows A LOT about the HR family. He sent me a list of most of the variations, but I deleted it. Maybe he'll chime in.

I still couldn't find the 360joules post I was looking for but...

There have been 3 main generations of Howling Rat.

The first gen:
Notice the smaller choil. These all had a saber grind and there were versions in black, a few tan and the bead blasted one shown on Swamp Shack's Area 51 page. (I really miss that one)

The second gen:
Had the larger choil. Some were made with a saber grind while a few appeared with full height grinds. Black and very few tans. This generation also includes the Howling Fat, which is 1/4" thick and has a full height grind and the larger choil. All HF's were black.

Generally, I think that you've covered them all. There are more variations within some of those categories. Here's my list, but I won't get into logo/nonlogo versions.

Hi mogmz,

The most recent batch is full grind and deep choil. Seems the Howling Rats are becoming a bit more collectible as well as usable. ;)

I'm not aware of anybody with all of the variations of Howling Rat. To date, I can count at least seven types.

Saber, Shallow, Black
Saber, Shallow, Tan
Saber, Shallow, Bead Blasted
Saber, Deep, Black
Saber, Deep, Tan
Full, Deep, Black
Full, Deep, Black 1/4"

That doesn't count the variations that came with/without the penetrator tip.
