Hey guys, been deciding what I want to order. I know I want a RMD but I was thinking about getting a howling rat as well. The question I have, is whether or not the choil is functional or is it just a sharpening choil. It looks like it may be too small for a finger but I cant tell for sure. If you got a in hand pic that would be great. Thanks guys

Since you mention "Order", I assume you are referring to the 3rd generation "Howling Rat "Little Mischief" - aka HRLM (with micarta scales) that is currently available for "RE"-pre-order (?????)

Even thought the 3rd generation is technically still called a "Howling Rat", to help distinguish between the different versions, the 3rd generation is generally referred to as the "HRLM" since it is quite different than the earlier Howling Rats.

The 1st and 2nd generation Howling Rats are most commonly referred to as Howling Rats and have Res-C handles. The first two were very similar. They both had "Usable" choils, but the 1st generations choil was shallow and the 2nd generations choil was deeper. Otherwise, about the same.

If the HRLM (micarta handle) is the one you are referring to, the choil issues has been discussed MANY times including about a month ago.

The RMD is one of THE GREAT all-time knives and a MUST have knife. - DON'T miss this opportunity for an RMD!!!

The HRLM is under-appreciated IMO. I think the choil needs modified to be made usable - although, honestly, I would probably have preferred NO choil on the HRLM (????). Anyway, once modified to have a choil that is at least "usable and functional" rather than a waste of space, the HRLM is an OUTSTANDING knife as well. Maybe a bit tall in the blade for its blade length, but otherwise a GREAT knife and a brute.

The choil modification is easy.

Thanks for the informative post

I made my choil bigger and removed the silly hole at the rear of the handle. (the way it should've been made)

MUCH better now !

David E, that's a great looking mod. I would love to see a HRLM from the Swamp in that configuration.

I have wide thick hands and fingers to boot, but I can get a tip in there, so I guess Id say its kinda usuable, but that choil mod would be heaven. ;)
