Howling Rat, tough?

Wow. I have been doing spring cleaning around the yard with my CT, and have been pretty impressed so far. I have a lot of weed/bush/crap undergrowth removal, and there are many times that I'm swinging close to the ground, and get accidental contact with rocks. That is why I am grateful for this kind of testing, regardless of who thinks it's "abuse". Maybe it is, but at least now we know how certain knives respond.

Thanks for the link, Eric. My Howler is getting to be my favorite of my small rat herd, so far. Although, the 'coot is hard to beat! :D

That was kind of surprising to me, the rock chopping was kind of extreme, but to prove a point. With a solid carbon steel, with a quality heat treatment, you should not be able to get a blade to shatter in pieces. I was impressed with the durability of the Howling Rat after that and I don't impress very easily.

Of course the other aspect is that this blade cuts very well, it is *NOT* a thickly ground tactical knife. The toughness is achieved not by simply laying on more steel, but through a very high performance steel due to the very high standards set for heat treatment and quality control at Swamp Rat.

i gotta say, now that ive gotten one (because of above review :D:D)

it is aweomse... soo, so awesome. the basic design in every way shape and form is that of a cutting instrument, with no folling around anywhere. a very straight forward go to knife. i wouldnt expect that the edge would be that tuff with how thin it is (a great slicer, even nib sharp!! wich i was very very pleasently suprised to find), but now that ive seen someone do that with it, i have absolutely no fears beating it into the ground. im so happy with this trade....

It is a very solid design, one which like most hard use knives really needs to be used extensively to be appreciated. My attitude for it changed dramatically after the above workout. The most impressive aspect is its overall performance in particular it cuts a lot better than many of the "Tactical" knives I have used, many of which would not do so well on the above prying and hacking.

I'm just bringing this back to the top. I think that sometimes the Howling Rat is overlooked, thinking that it isn't tough enough to handle prying etc. since it is only 3/16" I think that many people think they have to have the 1/4" CT or BR and I just want to remind everyone what the HR can do.

:D:D

My only regret is not buying my Howling Rat sooner.

For the money, you won't find a knife and sheath of that quality elsewhere. For a lot more money, you still won't find a knife that tough and may have to custom order a sheath of that quality.

It's also great as a pocket carry fixed blade, though a smaller sheath may be preferred for such tastes.
