Hello folks, my first post here. i am planning on getting the howling rat and bandicoot... but i can only get one at the moment...i have a question to any and all that can respond...which of the two would be better at serving a duel role of utility knife and self defence blade?...and does anybody carry either everyday?...any input would be appreciated...thanx

Hey Doc,

Welcome to the forum!

Each of those knives have their cult following. Regardless of which one I say, there will likely be somebody that recommends the other. However, I would recommend the Howling Rat as your first "do anything" knife. I absolutely love the blade shape and it is well suited to handle any task that you might ask of it.

Here is a webpage that shows this little knife thinking big.

Regardless of which knife you choose to buy first, you will not be disappointed.

I hope you stick around the forum and join in the discussion!

:D :D :D

I don't own a Bandicoot but I do have a Howler and I just ordered a Howling Fat. I love my howler so much I have ordered a pair of pants from armoralleather so I can carry it everyday. This awesome blade is almost indestructible. I was out throwing it yesterday and it throws better than my throwing blades. It chops like it's hungry as hell and it feels more natural in my hand than almost any other tool I've used. That's my endorsement, for what it's worth.

MymindisaMob... "Ordered"??? HF? ;)

Yes, a personal pick up. Hopefully SR Co. Store will have them soon. Didn't mean to get you alarmed. ;) :D

Got both, but I like the HR better.
I mean, A LOT better. :D

The balance on HR is much better than that of the Bandicoot and INFIcoot, IMHO. So, It's my EDC at the moment. ;)

Haven't seen any pics of your Bandicoot, Santi.

You must have an amazing collection over there, Santi. When are you going to show them off? I would love to see a pic of your entire collection of Swamp Rats and Busses.

In my working environment, I perfer Kydex. :D
Up in the woods, I prefer leather. ;)

Doc,

 You will not be disappointed in this knife. I have absolutely abused mine, to the point that any other knife would have broken, with no problems whatsoever. This knife is amazing.

I made a kydex sheath for my howler. Since I tend to get drenched quite a bit, I prefer the kydex because it dries so quickly. Plus it's extremely durable when venturing through the brush.

I love the looks and style of the leather sheaths, though. Tough call, but there are plenty sheath makers here on the forums that could provide excellent sheaths for it.

Santi,

Niice pieces! Two SBR's and an Inficoot! Have you submitted any of those pics to the SwampShack Website? Give Shane an email and he can get your collection "immortalized". ;)

Nah, but can you do that for me?

No problem. Keep an eye to the "members gallery" page for your stuff.

I'll also have him look at your Howler pics to put one or two of those up, as well.

I IMMEDIATELY went to Rat Knives and The Swamp when I saw your post... No Joy.

I was kinda hoping we would see some new stuff at the Co Store last week... :D

(Enjoy the HF! )

My first Rat was a Bandicoot. I chose it for its sticky/stabby ability. That's what it is carried for, as an EDC defense tool. Not as much belly as the HR though. I have a Badger Attack for that job.

All and all, ANY Rat will perform exceptionally well. The one thing to look out for is addiction. "one is too many and a million aren't enough" ;)

Buy and use what pleases you, that's what counts.
