Would someone be kind enough to help out a rookie by explaining the significant differences between these two knives?

Is there anyone who's had exerience with both, and if so how would you rate each of them?

Much thanks,

-Rick

2 different animals....there are not built for the same thing. Different materials.

HR = Great skinner and camp knife
DM = Mini Survival knife/ sharp crowbar.....still a great knife!

Though, the HR still makes a good little prybar. ;)

There was also a limited run of Howling Fats that were more similiar to the thickness of the Dumpster Mutt... still not quite as thick.

The Howling Rat is a versatile knife- a bit of belly and 3/16" thick. The old res-c HR had similiar material to the DM but still a larger grip. I find the HR res-c grip (also used on the old Bandicoot, plus the variants: INFIcoot and Howling Fat) fits me much better than the grip on the DM (originally used on the Busse Basic 3's.) The DM/B3 grip feels too small for my hand.

The DM blade? Wow! A .270-.275" thick spike! I can't imagine damaging this blade doing ANYTHING. A very extreme thickness in this size knife... not that there is anything wrong with that!

GF did sum it up very well - concisely answering you original questions.

HR - All around blade. Still thick compared to many other manufacturer's blades in that size. I've convexed mine and it has a very neutral balance. I can rip thru sheet metal or slice paper.

DM - More singular in use. A sharpened spike with a grip. It dares you to use it hard. I wouldn't want it to be my food prep blade though. ;)

Also, if you want a 3/16, hard-use, nice slicing, camp sized knife with a G10 or micarta, consider one of the RatManDu. I like this A LOT.

There are always the HRLM... :o ;)

I also prefer the Gen1 HR like PM pictured over the larger choil of the 2nd Gen (much more common to find 2nd Gen)

I have a Howling Fat in an Armoralleather Sheath that fits the new Yard Keeper perfectly.

The DM is no slouch......it can slice and chop pretty well for a knife its size. If I had to pick only one.....it would be tough, but splurge and get both!!!

Thanks a million for the information and the pics! Regardingthe different materials, what are they exactly?

I'm not an expert sharpener, so which would you say will hold an edge better under normal use, and which is easier to sharpen?
