Have a user Howling Fat that has seen blood and mudd almost daily for quite awhile, and whose edge is completely dull (I usually never let them get this far, but)...

Do I send her in to SRKW for a resharpen/reprofile?

Or, sharpen her myself, and maybe strip her down and use desert duracoat?

Do it yourself! The experience and do it your self mods are always great!

Well, I am very good with a stone free hand (been doing that 25years?), recently got and edge pro... and she is easy to be shaving sharp with, but i wanted something different with the howling fat, thats why i was thinking factory...

however, i decided to convex with sandpaper for the first time (all the forum talk intrigued me)...
grabbed my pack of wet/dry paper (220, 500, 1000, 1200) and folded a few sheets of shipping/wrapping material to stick under..

220 grit, about 5 minutes and the first side was fully convex. The other side in 5 and had a burr going... then just a few swipes on each side..

500 grit... 4 minutes per side do develope some burr, and she was very sharp to the feel already (she was really a butter knife and could not cut paper before i started).

1000 grit for 3-4 minutes (i was getting very fast with the swipes) and the convex was visibly polished.

1200 grit for a few minutes a side, and she shaved my arm no problem, in both directions.

I kept the blade elevated about the height of the blade width. All done in practically no time as my wife watched grays anatomy on tivo. So far, I am impressed. Maybe tomorrow i will hit the strop with varitas .5micron green and she will be perfect.. prolly will simply keep her lubed as usual rather than refinish for now...

-The convex method is quite impressive and cheap to really make a nice edge.
-I will report soon on how the edge holds up to my use/abuse.
-Thanks leatherface, your push was the final word that sent me to the garage to grab the sandpaper.

Hmmm, I would have suggested to send it in but, apparently, Gravelface's suggestion did have its merit:thumbup:.

What did you use as underlay for the sandpaper? Was it waterproof sandpaper or any other type?

Its not bubble wrap, but it comes in rolls, and is some weird foam type stuff, i use it to pack knives (and stuff) for shipping, i get it at a shipping store. Worked out great, but I will keep my eye out for a mouse pad.. as i will be doing this again (it was fun, and effective)

Thank you for the clarification. As for the type of the sandpaper that you used, it really slipped my attention that you had already mentioned that. Could it be an indication that I need some vacation:rolleyes:?
