I have an old 4" folding hunter that has seen better days, and should be replaced. I was wondering how they are doing on that model these days?
I have bought a Buck Approach recently, and it is OK, but made in taiwan and not quite what I was used to in Buck Knives.
I also have a Buck General that I used for years, and it finally broke. I sent the bottom half back to Buck and they sent me a new one! The new one was made in the USA, and it's a good knife.
Anybody get a folding hunter recently?

Some of us think that that is the only knife Buck makes. Really, the 110 is still one of the worlds great knives. I just picked up another one last Thursday.

It's doing amazing.

And now you can get it in all kinds of custom versions, too!

What a great knife, that Buck 110.

The Buck 110 is doing better than ever! The edge geometry is absolutely first rate, and the heat treatment is the best in the business.

You can get one exactly the way you like it with premium blade steel at the custom shop.

You can get one with S30V from Cabela's, either with wood or stag scales.

You can get the basic 110 just about anywhere for $30, or $20 or less if you look for sales. It will serve you well.

That same basic knife can go back to Buck with a $35 check and come back to you with a spiffy new BG-42 blade, making a great knife even better.

There are better knives for carrying in a pocket, prying car doors open, or stabbing through steel drum. There is not a fundamentally better slicing tool, especially in the price ranges of the various 110 offerings.

I'd say Opinels outslice the 110, not to contest that it's a fantastic knife at an incredible price.

I just received 2 more 110's today!!! Best folder money can buy!
Still USA made also!!!!

Welcome to the Buck forun Shadow...

The 110 is alive and well...

The right question tho is........ how many have we bought lately....:D :D

This is the Buck addicts anon club....

and just how old is your 110.......remember I asked first :) :)

Well, PackRat, let me tell you. My 110 is 28 years old now. I had it when I was living in the woods in Alaska, and what really messed it up was using it as a chisel to cut window frames in a cabin. Now, since I know that is how it got worn out I just can't send it back to Buck because that doesn't qualify as normal use to me. But I'm not complaining, I got my money's worth out of it.
I used it to cut the wedding cake for Marriage #1, but don't hold that against the knife. We all thought it would work out OK the day it did the cutting.
Nice to hear that I wouldn't be wasting my money on a new one. Let me ask another question to you old timers out there. What 110 would you suggest to somebody who is used to the old Folding Hunters like me?
PS- How do you break a Buck General? It's really hard. Mine broke when I got it stuck in a log and I used another piece of wood to bang it out. It broke in half. But that was after at least fifteen years of pretty hard service so you can't fault the knife.

Shadow,
THe good news is you have many opttions. You can send your old 110 in and get the blade replaced with a BG-42 blade for $35. You can buy a new 110 just about anywhere for about the same price. You can order a custom 110 from the Buck site for a little more that $100, or you can do like all of us here and do all the above. :) You can also buy an older 110 off ebay. I personally like the ones from the 70's. That's just my personal preference.
Mike

How about buy one of each and give us your feedback on which YOU like the best :D

If I were buying one and only one, I think I'd get the Cabela's Alaskan Guide with the CMP S30V blade, probably the wood scales.

OR The bass pro with 154 CPM and rosewood scales?
Jim

The 110 is listed in a recent article as one of the top knife innnovations of the past 50 years. Introduced in 1964, and its the most copied design around. It's a winner, and always will be in demand.

I hadn't considered that option!

I don't have any knives made from 154CM. I've had a few made of the Japanese equivalent ATS-34, but contrary to the many who loved it when it was "the" steel to have, I didn't like it. Every knife I had, whether benchmade, Koncept, etc. has a "gummy" feeling when I tried to sharpen it, and I could never get as sharp an edge as I do with AUS8A, much less S30V or any carbon steel. I suspect that was a factor of the heat treatments (too soft), and I'd like it better if it were harder.
