How's your experience with metal finish dyes?

Hey fellow makers,

I have a folder project I want to work on in the next few months when I catch up on my backlog (you never catch up...), or at the very least I'm slotting it in the schedule by then. I was curious if any of you guys have ever worked with metal finish dyes? The whole product is relatively new to me as I've never thought about the possibilities. I'm looking to use the dyes on some spacer material as an accent, and I wanted to know how nice the finishes can be, does it last, do I need anything special to apply it correctly ect..

Would you suggest some other method by chance? I've never needed color like that on steel, but this folder has a very specific marketing campaign I need to release it as and the color sounds like it would be a real bread winner for the project.

Any info is welcome, thanks guys!

If you just need to color spacer material is using titanium a possibility? You can anodize titanium to just about any color you want with the proper setup. Or you could always outsource it to someone that does anodizing.

I personally want to do everything in-house so if I have to send it out I'm probably not going to use that method. I don't really like to send stuff out and trust other people with my work, and then have to wait on it. I don't do big enough runs for that either, but that's just my personal preference. I know plenty of people have no issues with sending their work out, and I'm glad it works out for them.

I just came upon this dye, and was curious if anyone's ever messed with it. Personally I've never dealt with anything like it so I'm not against buying a bottle, but some experience could hopefully save me from doing that if it's a no-go. I'll link the product, let me know what you guys think. Thanks for the input!

Those are metal paints for art work. It won't work for knifes. Niter blue salts are the best coloring method for steel at home.

Thanks for the info Stacy! You just saved me the gamble. Appreciate all the help everybody!
