a friend gave me a compaq presario 6000us which is a model i have never messed with before and it was loaded with trojans and viruses really bad. i ran cureit which cleaned it up but now it wont log into any account, not even the admin account. i tried system restore before i even ran cureit but a box popped up saying it encountered a problem and couldnt open so it must have been corrupt. i was told there was another way to do a system restore from another partition on the hard drive that should be ok since it is the one you make the restore disc from when the system was brand new. my friend who usually helps me fix problems like this has been too busy to check it out and said i'm on my own with this one. does anyone know the key commands to get into this part of system restore? any help would be appreciated.

this system should have come with a "Quick Restore" cd. This CD interacts with a the System_sav partition (usually D:System_Sav). If you don't have the CD, you can contact COMPACT for a complete set of restore CDs. There are ways of busting into the administrator account. I'm assuming this is windows xp?

a friend gave me the system, he cleans and winterizes houses that people just moved out of and this computer was inside of a house. it has xp home on it. the thing did work but not very well. i'm trying to do this without having to deal with hp. i was told that since the sticker from the origonal copy of xp home was still on it with the key, that i could reload xp home from any disc and use that key instead of the one from the borrowed xp cd. i have all the drivers but i need to get into the system somehow. it wont let me do an fdisk, scandisc or anything else.

I'd wipe the disk and install fresh XP using the license from the sticker. It seems you have some MBR problem stopping fdisk. fdisk includes an mbr repair function with this command: fdisk /mbr

If that doesn't work, try http://dban.sourceforge.net/ for Darik's boot and nuke. This creates a bootable floppy or CD for wiping disks clean so you can start over fresh.

Then install as usual.
