Had to make some pegs for tameshigiri at my dojo tomorrow. Picked up some hardwood dowels at Home Depot and started choppin'. HR is still shaving sharp afterwards, but the coating will never be the same again. ;)

INFI rules. :D

Tameshigiri and HR abuse??? Count me in! Just got a new katana I need to break in

So what are the wooden pegs for?
Not much of a work out compared to what the HR can handle but it feels good to use her, doesn't it. Try throwing her.

Well, they're hardwood pegs. Somewhat tougher than the pine 1x6 you see underneath. ;)

The sharpened peg goes in a post and you spike a rolled-up, soaked grass mat onto the pointy end. It roughly simulates the consistency of human flesh for practice cutting with a katana.

Thanks, I knew about the mats, it was the wooden spikes I wasn't clear on, but I guess the mats have to be held vertical by something. I hope to try that some day. It's not something we do at our dojo.

Not one to nitpik here but why not spike up a couple of extra rolled mats and take a slice with some INFI, if the blade on yours is to short for that type of cut, I think there are some bigger ones at the company store.

ps: if you tell us you tried this and don't post pics I bet a one year no INFI could happen out of the blue.

Where's the chopping into street signs kind of stuff? My Opinels see harder work than this. :p

book'em: Yeah, we don't do this too often, either. Which is why I had to make some spikes (we didn't have any laying around). It varies from school to school how often they do cutting (if at all).

I would have, but for three items: (1) My 12" tanto was barely long enough for me to make it through--the HR wouldn't have at all, (2) This is a Japanese dojo and such activity would have been disrespectful, and (3) You mean the AK's? Honestly, I just don't care for them. I'd rather have a nice stout short EDC blade for that kind of money.
