HR vs SAR

Never got the chance to own a SAR. I was wondering what hte difference is are between the HR and SAR in terms of performance. Which does tasks better? SAR too heavy and large for edc? side by side pics?

I was thinking about my HR would be perfect if it had scales.

I don’t own the HR but I do have the SAR as well as a coot, bogdog and safari skinner.
The 3 others I mentioned fill the same niche as the HF (I believe) and they are totally different than the SAR. The SAR does heavy chores extremely well and small chores good. The others are vice versa. They will handle any heavy chore thrown at them but they are better slicers than the SAR. I think the SAR would be a good EDC. My reasoning is that A real world emergency would require a tougher blade. I am thinking along the lines of having to pry open car doors in a wreck or if you needed to bail out in an EOTW scenario you could do more with the SAR. Personally I would like to use my Ratdaddy as any EDC but I don’t think that would be publicly accepted.

Here is a side by side comparison of the blades I own.

I will try and get a spine shot of them tonight if you would like to see that. Another note is the Coot has a penetrater tip that may be benificial depending on the application. The sar is the top knife in the Pic.

Nice pics! How would the SAR do at slicing cardboard, and does it have a good belly? How is the handle to blade ratio? Just the right balance or too much?

The SAR's weak spot is trying to cut through objects like thick cardboard. It cuts small stuff easy but The 1/4" blade produces a lot of friction on the thicker stuff like the industrial packing boxes (1" thick cardboard). Cutting cardboard (IMHO) is better suited for the thinner blades. The reason I say it works good as a slicer is cause I use it to make salads and cut meat. it peels potatoes well but if you try to push cut the potato in half you can feel the width of the blade. It slices all veggies with the greatest of ease and easily makes jerky thin slices of meat. It works well when beating (batoning) it through wood. It has a very good feel to it, The best I have felt actually. It small but gives you a superman feel while holding it. It so stout you feel you could cut a tank open with it. The only thing tougher than the SAR is trying to actually purchase one. :D

Hey, Custom1022 -

That's a nifty looking red "tail" on that SAR - did you make it?

Well sounds like it would be a good slicer for edc sort of things, and good for batoning wood at the end of the day when you're grilling meat and drinking with friends.

Getting one would be the hard part. Plus finding a used one would be even harder. Funny how used rats are loved more then the safe queens. My HR looks like hell but I'd never sell it.

I totally agree about feeling the width of this blade when splitting or cutting. It has a very narrow blade profile for its thickness.

As far as the weight, the center of balance is pretty far into the handle. It seats well into the hand making the blade feel almost weightless. IMO this makes the SAR Rat a great fighting blade. Another great strength of the SAR Rat is its piercing/stabbing strength. This blade is like a railroad spike and could pry like a son-of-a-gun. Very beefy for its small size.

Great pics, custom1022 -

Just to clarify something for me, could you do a side-by-side spine shot with that SAR and the FSH? They're supposed to be the same thickness, but I don't believe it!! :D

Thanks,
Greg

Here they are:

The Rats look great, but the Busse doesn't seem to be holding up too well! :D
