HR2 Discontinued

I never liked the butt end of the HR. I thought of getting one and modding one but never got around to it…..

That HR2 model has been on the webstore for what feels like a couple of years or more. It's one that I've owned and while they are nice it's not something I had to have and ended up trading mine. It competes to closely to the TGULB to keep on the webstore indefinitely. That said, I am quite fond of the 7" versions such as this Battle Grade Hell Razor I finished for a customer recently.

This one was done at 12 DPS and actually ended up being very thinly ground at the edge, I was shocked at how narrow this 12 DPS bevel ended up being. It should cut VERY well now and I am certain the owner will love his new razor blade! For reference, this bevel width appears very similar (without measuring) to what my TGULB Stonewashed came with at 25 DPS or twice the edge angle!

How do you measure edges? I put the clamped knife in a vice. I make sure its flat by using a very accurate app on my phone then position the stone and rod in the sharpening position then place the phone on the rod. This gives me the exact angle

This is what I use, it works both to set the proper angle for reprofiling to my grinding wheel and there are also notches along the outside that approximate the inclusive angle of the bevel currently on the tool. When I set the bevel angle to the grindstone I have to add generally 3-7 degrees to the actual measurement I want because I set the flat part of the tool (that you see resting on the plane blade) on the primary grind of the knife because it's most repeatable this way.

The primary grind gets measured with an angle cube beforehand so I know the exact measurement. It gets difficult to get an accurate reading where the WM-200 hits the primary grind with hollow or convex grinds because there is no single angle that you can measure but the curvature represents multiple angles blended together. After I've taken my best guess here I continue checking as I'm grinding to verify on the bevel gauges whether or not I'm hitting where I'd expected to.

This setup may not be as accurate as a laser goniometer (which CATRA sells) but I have not gotten my hands on one yet to test. I know for a fact that using these does require a relatively flat and clean bevel or you'll get multiple readings of each individual facet that may be on the blade. This is common and difficult to avoid when grinding by hand though I've gotten pretty good with the Tormek about avoiding this (just for the sake of aesthetics mainly, it won't affect function much).
