Hey guys, so I worked up a Heat Treat regiment for S35VN. I know this may be common knowledge for some of the pro's here, but I needed my own recipe with known results. Thought I would share. I started with Precision Ground S35VN from Jantz. 1/8th thick by 1.25'' wide. Square sized samples were prepared, a total of 6. These samples were then sent to an independent testing facility for HRC values after treatment. All samples were tested 5 times with an average and Std. Dev. reported.

Evenheat Kiln was used for programing and preforming both hardening and tempering cycles:
2 segments, ramp full to 1575f and hold for 10 minutes
ramp 3000 to 1975f and hold for 20 minutes
plate quench (all samples in same foil packet)
Dry ice in denatured alcohol for sub zero 24 hours( I know excessive time)

Samples were treated as follows with HRC results:

Sample 1: NO heat treatment, as is from Jantz= Hrc 24.9 / Std dev of 0.3

Sample 2: Heat treat only after plate quench= Hrc 63.1 / Std dev of 0.2

Sample 3: Heat treat with sub zero, no temper= Hrc 63.2 / Std dev of 0.3

Sample 4: Sub zero then Temper 2 times at (350 deg./2hours)= Hrc 61.3 / Std dev of 0.2

Sample 5: Sub zero then Temper 2 times at (400 deg./2hours)= Hrc 59.8 / Std dev. of 0.3

Sample 6: Sub zero then Temper 2 times at (500 deg./2hours)= Hrc 59.0 / Std dev. of 0.3

I have learned a lot from this experiment, I feel like I may be ready to start producing some knives that I know should preform to my liking.

Any comments or concerns please feel free to post, love the forum and happy to be here, Thanks in advance
Hope this can help some in need.

Thanks for posting the info. I just did my first S35VN blade at 1975F (40 minutes) with dry ice/denatured alcohol (1hr) and a 400F temper x2. Good to know the approx hardness.

You can alternatively try 2100F and cryo, then either the low temper or high temper 975F, can get 65 rc.

With 1975f, cryo, and 400f, I get Rc61. With sub zero, I got one Rc point less. 1950f gives me Rc60.

Your process is working as it should.
