So, i have and edc a wenger SI and have done so on and off (mostly on) since late 2010.
after being away from the forums awhile i start browsing and discover the wenger SI is discontinued
So i spend some time trying to find a back up in case i lose or break mine..and no luck whatsoever.

so i got a little bday money saved up and today i picked up my new official replacement knife. A Black alox pioneer. I am really pleased with the price and as soon as it arrives it will allow me to put the wenger SI up for safekeeping. i would hate to lose it now.

anyways i did alot of research, i have a farmer which i dont particular care for (dont get me wrong, great knife, but its just thicker and bulkier than i like and i just dont NEED the saw) and i compared alot of other models specifically in alox. Over the last 3something years i have determined the the soldier/SI is just about the perfect edc knife for me. I've carried it alone and as a backup/2nd knife for 95% of those last 3something years. So I am pretty pleased. Its late on a sunday night so i am unsure when it will arrive here, but when it does i will post pics

this is pretty cool.
put the farmer in my altoids survival kit
put the wenger up for nostolgia and preservation of the species
and get to watching the black alox slowly age over the next x amount of years :D

Great knife. I have a few Alox Soldiers standing by b/c I feel the same way about the pattern.

Any of the alox SAK's make a fine edc that lacks nothing in making a perfect everyday pocket knife. If I wasn't a knife nut, I would have settled on my old Wenger SI many years ago. It's never failed me, it's never failed to do what I needed to do, it's solved many problems out in the middle of someplace, No, it will never age with me like a nice old bone handled carbon steel slip joint, but is that really needed?

When I was a young man in the army, I carried a Buck stockman and a SAK tinker for many many years. They went with me into civilian life, and that old Buck 301 was my everyday knife. It's a good stainless steel and black delrin, and no patina ever built up on it. But it does show honest wear for the quarter of century it was carried. It developed a value all it's own, and now my grandson has it enshrined in a show case with some photo's from my army days. It became a artifact of my life for my kids and grandkids, in spite of being a stainless steel and plastic item.

Go with the alox pioneer in good faith that it will indeed become your artifact in time. Every ding and scratch will be a scrap book of life's adventures that the knife accompanied you on. My Wenger SI is never far away. Even if I am not carrying it per se, it will be in a outside pocket of my daypack.

You can never go wrong with an alox SAK!

Help somebody out that doesn't know any better. What makes alox models so much better than the regular SAKs? They have reduced tool count and are on par with the Recruit, but they lack the scale tools, and I'm not seeing anything to their design that makes them anymore durable.

Just preferences I guess. I've come to dislike carrying the thicker models when I hardly ever use any of the additional tools. The thicker alox handles won't crack like the plastic ones if you drop them and the knives are a little easier to keep clean. They have bigger pins I think, but the tools are also thicker.
They all work, most people don't carry a knife at all and somehow survive so whatever you like best!

its funny. most people who survive without a knife live rather sheltered lives. we live in a technological world and when we see a breakdown of said civilization (ie new orleans during/after katrina) we realize just how fragile our existance truly is. some of us like being prepared for eventualities and sudden hiccups of the norm. that being said, after watching new orleans, why WOULDNT people want to be as prepared as possible.

sorry went on a little rant there didnt i?

as for the alox models. reduced tools is true, but the lack of tools on the back of the model means a more comfortable grip when using the knife. nothing like a corkscrew digging into your hand while carving etc etc. thicker blade and tools gives me more confidence in the knife comparatively speaking. a big deal? maybe/maybe not. but it makes me feel better.
and the alox (IN MY OPINION) is more attractive than the plastic scaled models.

so as SAKs said, whatever works for you really, i just really like the alox models :D

I actually prefer the smooth back SAK's like the bantam, recruit, old soldier, Wenger SI. Better feel in hand when working with it, and for the alox, what seems to be a more business like and rugged construction. Like the old MLK knives we had in the service, only far better quality.

The ALOX SAKs are simple, bulletproof and dead sexy....IMHO! :D

Double thick blades too.....

I am bummed, i got an email response today saying they were out of stock in the black alox pioneer. they expect new stock in 10-14 days *grumblegrumble*
they did say i could call tomorrow and swap it for another product or get a refund. I will wait, but i may call and see if they have a red pioneer in stock :D

All good knives mentioned. I EDC two knives: a SAK Deluxe Tinker in a leather belt pouch and a Kershaw Volt II in my pocket for the heavier duty cutting. Have about 50 SAKs (both Vic and Wenger) in my box. Not really a collection (except a couple), mostly just ones I wanted to try over the years, then try another, etc. etc. Prefer the 84/85 or 91 mm sizes. I find the smaller SAKs just not strong enough to do much except clean my fingernails. Of course I live in the country which is unfortunately being suburbanized :-( But most guys here carry a belt knife, folder or fixed, it's the newie city folk that don't know what a knife is used for :-)

Rsmith_77, can you please email me the name of the store you tried buying the black pioneer at? I was about to order one for myself from an online store, but I had a feeling they might be out of stock. I think they have issues with updating their webpage with current stock, and if it is the same store that you tried ordering from, I will look elsewhere (or at least wait until they get new stock if that ever happens).

I edc an electrician daily. The only thing I would change would be to use a bit nicer steel. 154cm would be great. Otherwise I can't see myself changing to something else anytime soon.
