So today was a lot of fun
did a day date with the wife, doing the pawn shops, hardware stores and military surplus store sweep of the city of jackson
I had some money left over from my birthday and some stuff to find :D

before the knife content, i just feel the need to share. At target i got a Stanley cooking camp set for like $15, 24 ounce bowl with 2 cups that fit inside. At Tractor Supply company i got a diamond sharpener so i can touch up knives quicker. At a local military surplus place i picked up a new (size small) alice pack that i am really excited about for like $30

Then i went to one of the local Ace hardware stores. Now this particular ace must have been working on dumping a stockpile of old new stock. And i couldn't resist. I picked this up for like $13 and some change. According to the ace salesman its brand new and does not say stainless so it is carbon steel. I just couldn't pass it up.

Now i suspect this particular knife was a lower end knife even when brand new, its fit and finish is pretty meh. The springs are higher than the scales, even when the blades are shut, there is a little wiggle in the big blade and blade centering is ...well lets just say neither blade is centered very well. Oh and the grind is atrocious. But its sharpening up well and the blades are THIN, i think this guy is going to be a better slicer than my texas jack (albeit not nearly as tough i suspect). Please forgive the sharpening scratches, that was me working out this new diamond sharpener :P

Anyways, this is my newest find.

**meh photobucket is acting up, i'll post what i can and try and edit later *grumble grumble**

I really like the looks of that knife. Just look at how that full clip blade trumps the texas jack in size!?

Too bad its not quite the same quality as you stated. I wonder who made this?

Good luck scratching up those edges with your new diamond :)

well i just cleaned her pretty good with some dawn and hot water...seems to have sorted out the blade play in the clip blade, still has funky springs and horrible blade centering but she will either make for a great gift, a giveaway or i'll just use her as intended, ie ride her hard and put her away wet ;)

she is bigger in every dimension to the texas jack, about 4" in length with bigger clip and bigger pen blade. she is about the size of a 301 so she rides in the hand pretty comfortably.

You know, I've had something similar happen a couple times. I'll have a knife with a bit of play (just a small amount, mind you), and after a thorough degunking, it's gone. This happened most recently to my olive green linen micarta GEC Bullnose. I don't know what internal tensions are at work there, but I've definitely seen it happen.

Nice find, too, Rsmith. Looks like a good, solid worker.

yeah i dont know what to say, it seems to have sorted itself out ..as bwperdue says, was minor albeit noticeable side to side play, after cleaning it...just a hint *shrugs* i have no more explanation than that :p

on the pen blade it has stamped, patent 3,317,995
and on the clip blade it has stamped, Ranger, PROV U.S.A.

the blade etch says Ranger Ultra*Honed
and the shield just says Ranger

does not appear to be any way to date the thing
oh, the scales appear to be delrin, reminiscent of bucks but feels much thinner or less sturdy
and i think the bolsters are crimped on. just by the way the feel.

I like it. I would use the heck out of it and use it as my sharpening practice along the way! Maybe it will surprise you?
