well number 11 is ground hardened and is in the over tempering as i write this on its first cycle

i just wanted some opinions on wether or not i should acid etch the for the finish because 4 of the knives i have made and are used daily by my friends have all started to rust (out in open air mind you)

would acid etching help to retard or slow down the instorust factor of 0-1

i know that robert dark used it on the wonderful edc i bought from him and it isnt even darkening

suggestions would be good

it does slow down the tendency to rust. some. O-1 likes to rust.

what kind of sheaths are you making, leather or kydex? if leather, it has to be vegetable tanned leather and not chrome or any nonstainless knife is doomed and most stainless.

DOH, just reread the "open air" part. Disregard second paragraph. O-1 LOVES to rust in open air.

I have found that the best way to retard the rust process in 0-1 is to mirror polish it . Like most my first dozen or so knive were 01 great steel but I'm not a big fan of mirror polshed blades. I will do them on a order but not for fun. I made a knife for my father in law out of 01 and it has a mirror polish and he has not had any problems with rust. The worst case was when I bead blasted some 01 on a humid day. I live about a half an hour away from where I beadblast and by the time I got home there was a slight surface rust starting. Acctuly it was a couple of finger prints.

Moral of the story if you close the pours of the steel it is less likely to rust under normal open air conditions.

yeah thanks i did end up going with the acid etched finish to protect this baby it is almost the same as my #10 except for the fact i made this one full size no more mini's for me i finally trust myself enough to be able to grind more than 2-3.5"

ill post pics when done

p.s. its acid etched 0-1 (deeply) flat ground with a full birds-eye maple handle it looks so pretty
now for the dang sheath i know im going leather but what type do i want to make always the deal breaker yah know as this is the first knife i have actually made for myself and not others the last 2 knives were supposed to be for me but umm.... well yah know g/f has dad and step dad for fathers day 2 of her best friends b/f's b-days so low and behold im on #11 and still dont have one of my own knives to play with im the one who should be saying DOH!!!

PJH, I have found the best way to keep O-1 from rusting is to use ATS-34.O-1 likes to rust (translate-loves to rust).Acid etch might help some. Cleaning and oiling are essential after use and handling.

keep the 0-1 oiled and dry. It will stain but rust is a different matter. I use 0-1 ALOT and havent had any problems with it.... but then again, I make sure that the knives dont get put away damp and keep them oiled. Do you know what was done with the knives before they showed rust spots?

I've been beating up a test knife I made out of O1 and it is finished to a 220 grit belt finish (I think. Maybe 400, but I think I stopped at 220), got no oil, coating or anything else. I chopped and stabbed a bunch of wood with it, then washed it in the sink and dried it off, then cut a lime up with it, which stained the blade a little, and just wiped that off with a towel and it hasn't rusted a bit. Maybe you're caring TOO well for your knives! ;)

Etching makes a big difference, as far as I can tell, on 1084 and 1095, so I imagine it would help on O1, although they are completely different animals.

thanks guys one of the knives i know of for sure has just been used and used and used no daily cleaning or anything handle/used dry then put back in the sheath
so i reall dont know what went wrong i know i have a couple of knives that have been just sitting here unfinished for like months and no rust no discoloration
so in conclusion i really dont knowwhat they are doing wrong with them all i know is i have 3 people complaining about it and have refinished all of the knives to make them happy i told them about 0-1 or any high carbon non stainless knife, it discolors and darkens with use maybe this just didnt sink into them when i flat out told them and even wrote it down that these knives need to be cleaned and oiled regularly and never put it away wet as leather absorbs moisture
i know the one knife has been handled alot he shows it ff to all his friends and then just gets put away without any reguard
so the culprit must be lack of care in thier cases thanks guys

try etching one and letting the same guys use it to see what the difference is.
