It's kinda fat like a walrus..... But it feels robust and firm in that hand. This is Hrosshvlar or the Little Walrus. The knife is obviously of Scandinavian inspiration... but no particular time period. But I like to think it smacks more of the Viking era in Iceland and Greenland. The simple carving on the elk spacer is from a Viking hilt in the Ian Pearce book. I'm new to carving so I may still be tinkering with this! The blade is 4.5" and is a 4 bar composite of 19th century wrought iron (lake Superior shipwreck), 2 bars of opposing twist and an edge of W2. This came from a previous billet that mostly failed in a Norse single edge sword project... hence the strange pattern (take from what would have been the tang). There is some stacked birch bark and the grip is 10,000 yr old plus fossilized walrus ivory which is mineralized. The total length is 9". The bead is a carved piece of soapstone native to Scandinavia. This knife, like I said, is wonderful in the hand. Thanks for looking!
This was taken before the handle was complete but it shows the tones in the ivory more accurately.
