Hi

I am able to get some harderned HSS steel blanks. they are in dimentions of 20cm length and width comes from 1.5 cm - 5cm

thickness is 2mm 3 4 5 6 and 8 mm

I will be getting 2mm thick and the 3mm.

I was wondering if 5 6 and 8 mm would make a practical good knife? I would have a convex grind on it or is there any better advise?

I cant do a scandi as I do not have the precision.

Im sticking to 30mm width to make them full tang. so, how thick would be too thick? It would be a bait cutting knife mainly for the thinner blank.

I would keep it as thin as possible for ease of grinding. But make sure the steel is through-hardened, and not bimetallic. It might be a good idea to get one blade first and test it with a file or grinder. Some of my smaller blades are not through hardened, and not suitable for this purpose.
 
thanks. i ordered two and it should be in today. Its 2 and 3 mm thick.

if its good, i was thinking of 4 - 8 mm. i think a hefty blade would be quite interesting but not so practical. what do you guys think? a thick blade would look nice with a convex grind, the problem is getting that in the first place.
 
Probably not so practical with this steel when there are so many good alternatives out there. But a thin high hollow grind is one area this would really excel.
 
Got any leads on where to get this stuff? The price of saw blades is pretty high unless the link Sodak posted is willing to break up a pack.
 
I also found some German suppliers a while ago, I'll try to find them again. But it will still be $$$, especially with shipping.

Hi I am in china right now and these are not sold readily like that to overseas buyers. I have in fact got someone to help me grind the blade but it was not what i had wanted, he gave me a chisel grind instead. I eventually hope to get him to make one with a scandi grind.

I have gotten the 2 - 3 and 6mm piece. the 6 is heavy. If you are keen please pm me and will see what i can do.
