Greetings
I'm working on a knife out of a piece of stainless damascus from damasteel. It is composed of RWL 34 and PMC 27. From what I have found out RWL 34 is very close to ATS 34. I'm going to send this one out fot its HT. What I need to know is what to tell the people doing the HT to treat it as. I would also apreciate any sugestions as to who I should have do the HT. Thanks

The best thing to do is get recommendations from Damasteel. As for the heat treater find one that does knives.

Get in touch with Paul Bos, the master at HT'ing stainless knives for those who don't do their own.
His listed e-mail addy is paulbos@buckknives.com. Someone else may know his phone number. He'll know what to do. Great guy, always answers despite the high volume of customers he deals with. Have him do the blade and you won't go wrong.
I think basically you use the same conditions as ATS34, but I'm not certain.

Good luck, and enjoy, it's nice steel.

I use D'Alton Holder for my Damasteel and he has done about a dozen or so blade so far with SUPER results. 623-878-3064. Full vacumn and cryo treament included in the price. I have tested the Rockwell on a certifided tester and they are right on the money. I am a tool and die maker and fully capable of doing the treament myself but I don't have a vacumn or cryo. If you are going to the trouble to make a custom knive and you want to get the best results from you steel use a professional service. Just a small amount off on the calibration of the oven or a pin hole in you wrap can mean a lot of work down the drain.

Thanks all for the responces. I've been doing my own HT on O1 and 440c, but this is too nice a piece of steel to not make sure it is as good as possible.

I have been using the Damasteel for a couple of years and have two that are my carry knives. They are incredible. On any air hardening steel the temp and time are much more critcal than with oil or water quench. The cryo really brings out the best in the stainless too. There are some very good articles on the web about cryo treatment of steel and what actually is happening and why it is so good for knives. We use a lot for cutting tools at work too.

First let it heat for about 5 hours at 750°- 780° Celsius.

Then:

Heating at 1050° Celsius, tempering at 220°Celsius (2hours)
=> RWL 34 : Rockwell 59
=> PMC 27 : Rockwell 53

Heating at 1050° Celsius, tempering at 175° Celsius (2 hours)
=> RWL 34 : Rockwell 62
=> PMC 27 : Rockwell 54

Heating at 1080° Celsius, tempering at 220° Celsius (2 hours)
=> RWL 34 : Rockwell 58
=> PMC 27 : Rockwell 56

This I got from a Dutch knifemaking manual. The original source is Damasteel itself.

I know it is in Celsius, but I live in belgium you see.

ok if I rember correctly the conversion is 9/5 +32. I think I might switch to the metric system so that it does't feel so hot in the shop. 35 degrees sounds soo much cooler than 95. Well maybe it sounds a little too cold. Oh well, good information from all of you. I think I'm going to send the blade off to D'Alton Holder for the HT.
