Any forumites live in or near Hudson ?

We're thinking about becoming snowbirds and wondered what the area is like.

My girlfriend grew up there in the '80's. During that time it was basically still segregated if you can believe it. It sounds like there is a good and bad side of the train tracks. It is close to the gulf if you like the ocean.

I have been near by recently and you definitely won't be the only snow bird. I'm not sure I ran into the first person that didn't have a 'north' accent.

I can find out more if you would like. I am about 1.5 hrs away. I think the south Florida concrete jungle disease is working its way north and starting to affect the area. Lots of new subdivisions and golf courses and 'retirement communities' from what I can tell. It use to be beautifully rural and is quickly becoming disgustingly average. Florida won't be worth living in, in 20 yrs if you enjoy the woods and it actually being quite at night.

What kind of information are you looking for?

I was just checking out the gulf side of the state and found that there are actually some affordable houses with gulf access. Just wondered if it was "too good to be true"
Figured there must be some horrible drawback , like high crime rates or something.

While there are some bad areas I don't think overall there is a high crime rate.

I was recently in the weeki watchee/ spring hill area as it has been awhile since I have been around those parts. From what it looks like to me some of the areas may have fairly recently been unincorporated. I say that because there will be a run down trailer and then a 400K house sitting next to it. It looks like people were allowed to do what they wanted as far as building until recently. I could be wrong on that.

I will ask her more about it as she still visits and has a few friends in the area.

Let me know what you are looking for as far as an area to live in. Looking for a little house on a canal? A house in a small neighborhood? A trailer on 20 acres? I know my way around the area pretty well and may be able to suggest something. You can email me if you want.

We have been looking at the little houses on the canals at Hudson Beach. I like the idea of being able to walk out my back door and be able to hop in my boat. I'm pretty sure that will be where we look first.

Thanks for the help

Mark,

Check around Port St Joe and Apalachicola also.

I live in St. Petersburg and own a second place in Citrus County, (manufactured home in the country), 2 counties north of Pasco, (where Hudson is). I drive through Hudson once every couple weeks. It is congested on US-19, but if you get off the main roads, you'll find it still has a smaller town/rural feel to it. Take your time looking around for property, it is a buyer's market. Be careful where you buy (Flooding), and be aware flood insurance cost a lot. That is one of the reasons there are so many places on the water for sale. That and the crappy economy. Good luck on the house hunt.
