Hug your kids--and make them wear seatbelts

Today I'm going to a wake for the 16 year old daughter of a friend of mine.

She and her younger sister went to the store on Mother's Day to get some snacks before treating their Mom to dinner at home. She lost control of the car less than 2 miles from home and was ejected from the car in the crash. She died at the scene. Her sister, who the papers reported as wearing a seatbelt, was unharmed. Police said that they were investigating, but that is appeared to be a single car accident with an unknown cause. It was the middle of the day, the weather was fine.

I get mad at my son sometimes and yell at him for not doing his homework or not doing his chores. Something like this really makes you stop and think. He drives a lot, sometimes at night and it is worrisome but you've got to let them grow up too.

So, hug your kid, and make sure they wear their seatbelts.

When my kids were small, I found a way to play on their sibling competitiveness. I instituted a rule that, when I started the car and put it in gear, anyone who could look at anyone else and say, "You didn't fasten your seat belt"
was owed 25 cents by that person. It cost me a few quarters when I would intentionally be caught just to reinforce the rule. Money well spent.

Today, one is 31 and one is 27, but they invariably use their seat belts. The one with children is also fanatical about his kids being in proper car seats.

 That is a wonderful trick, will keep it in mind for when I have some youngins :)

So terrible. A young life stolen,

There is a bumper sticker I saw the other day...

Hug your kids at home. Belt them in the car.

Death be not proud

It is a tough rule to remember. Tomorrow is promise to no man.

When our kids were younger, we wouldn't even start the car until every one was buckled in. My kids used to scream at my mother in law when she would start driving and they didn't have their seat belts buckled, it drove her nuts. She grew up when people were not as diligent about using seat belts, so she is more lax about using them.

Wow, a good lesson in (humility and) patience for me. My son reminds me that the car shouldn't be moving until we're buckled in. The little dude keeps me in line . . . :o

Shann - so sorry to hear about this. Peace & condolences from Concord.

thx - cpr

I have seen too many accidents that resulted in death due to failure to wear a seatbelt. Both young and old. But I've also seen situations that if the person was wearing a belt that they would have died. Not wearing it saved their life. It's one of those things that just happens. No one can ever explain it.

I'm sorry the family has to go through this. It is never easy to bury your child.
