A buddy of mine has gotten permission for me to remove some HUGE burls from some maple trees, as long as I tar the wounds. What would you do to get the best use from these? Should I have them cut and kiln dried or just let them sit outside and sphault? What do you guys think?

I would kiln dry them. letting them rot(spalt), is a tricky business, and could cost you the wood.

The really nice spalted maple I've seen wasn't burl. I have some spalted burl at home, but I'm not convinced it looks better than just burl.

If the burl looks like a onion it will fall apart, if it looks like little eyes then you have something.

Cut it into slabs and dry it. Lot's of wood drying info on the web.
