Huge Sheaths -- WHY?

Seems like the trend the past few years for custom leather sheaths, is that they tend to be huge with all sorts of pockets and such. I really don't get this as sometimes they are even much bigger then the knife itself. In my opinion a sheath is designed to hold a knife, not all all your kit for the day. Is it that the people who buy these really don't use their knives, but just play with them? I find it hard to imagine carrying some of these sheaths for several days straight let alone all day every day on your property.

Here is a photo of what I am talking about. This is just a monstrous leather sheath for a BK-7. Look how tiny the 7 is compared to the sheath!:D

What are your guys thoughts?

Maybe that sheath also is a pistol holster? I could probably fit my SP101 in there. Hehe :D

Speaking of firearms it kind of reminds me of when you see the mall ninjas at the range with AR's that have everything in the world attached to them but will never use any of them. Hmm lets see, like this. Hehe:D

That looks like a Skystorm sheath, although it may be a Hedgehog one. I'll be honest, I'm one of those guys that has the whole kit and caboodle attached to my 2. The reason is I keep it in my car and in case of emergency when I'm out and driving I have everything in one place that I can grab and survive for a few days. Mind you, I'm also a big guy so having an extra pound and a half or two pounds sitting on my belt doesn't affect me in the slightest.

The flip side of the coin I have a very minimalist couple of sheaths too, I have an Esee 3 piggybacked onto an Esee LS that is in kydex from Godspeed.

For me, it all depends on the intended use and also a bit of a fashion statement. Leather just screams taste.

In all fairness that sheath has two knives in it....doesn't it ?
Something along the top of the picture side of the sheath has USA printed on it.

I agree that it has a lot to do with the intended use of the knife, as well as personal preference. For me, my "property" consists of a 2 story in the middle of the city - so EDC'ing a 7" fixed blade is pretty much a non starter. For the times I do carry a fixed blade - fly-fishing small creeks, day hikes in the mountains, 3-5 day backpacking trips (where I usually set up a base camp and do day hikes) - I can see where a larger sheath containing a small PSK might come in handy. I already have a knife sheath, a separate BDU pouch with my survival stuff, and sometimes a water bottle carrier or dump pouch on my belt when I'm out bumming around in the bush, and it's already starting to look like a Batman utility belt. In these cases I can see where having an all-in-one kit could come in handy; easier to grab and make sure it's on your person. Just my thoughts, YMMV.

Well considering how many of those sheaths I have built over the last couple years I am guessing it's because that is what the customer wants. If said customer uses it as designed and intended then good for them and if others just hang it on the edge of their recliner for added ninjaness while watching scooby doo reruns then its neither mine nor your business to deride them for doing so. Some people like the kitchen sink method whereas others would rather just tie it around their neck.

I hump a Junglas in a sheath of the same design and oh my god 'it's even bigger than the knife' and I don't fall over from exhaustion after two blocks, but then gnomes are built pretty good.

All my Sheaths are Custom Leather as I really don't like my "stuff" scratched up or marked up and that other stuff does just that plus new Leather Sheaths smell good + look good + feel good when they are worn..!!^^^**** And it you happen to have your Knife knocked out of your hand you can knock the other person out with your well built Sheath.!^ LOL

The couple custom sheaths I've ordered where scrawny in comparison to the pic you posted...

I feel gyped, that is a serious piece of leather with all the bells and whistles.

Just how the buyer specified it I assume, looks nice.

That is funny Greebe.A couple of weeks ago me and a guy who used to post here a lot were talking about this very topic and the analogy we envisioned looked a lot like the pic you posted.

It depends...if the knife, sheath, and associated additional equipment show signs of real use in the environments they were intended to be used, then I say he/she knows what they're doing. Now, there are fantasizers... I won't call them mall ninjas, but call them backyard Rambo's, who have a sizeable collection of cutlery, camp equipment, tents, stoves, etc, and everything is brand new and mint, and the equipment appear in a variety of "in the wild settings", but the fotos are perfectly staged, the equipment hasn't a scratch, nick, or even so much as a finger print smudge....the kydex and/or leather are perfectly perfect, shined with who knows what; why some have been camping and "cooking", and every outdoor necessity one should have when "camping" is absolutely new; in these cases, I wonder what the point is...

I guess I'm not seeing how gigantic the sheath in question is. It looks to be a correctly-sized sheath for a 7, with a piggybacked pouch and a steel loop. If the pouch was removed, I'm wondering if the OP would still think its too large. Any smaller, and I don't think you'd like it much, as the blade would poke out a little.

The addition of extra positioned storage makes it easier for the for the individual to carry more gear comfortably. Why fill your pockets when you can easily attach a carry pouch to your sheath? In a given situation the freed up area in your pockets can now be used to carry something else and your original pocket filler is still readily available when you reach for your knife. If trained properly it is more efficient when reaching for different survival options in one location. Anybody that is used to carrying duty gear will agree. It is also up to the individual and their preferred methods of carry to know exactly what feels comfortable for them. The more comfortable you are in high stress situations makes it easier for you to think and less likely to panic increasing your chances of survival.

Love my Ka-Bar 1245, but always thought the sheath was too long for my knife's 8" blade.

Now, my Azwelke kydex sheath is an absolute perfect complement to my BK10
