Huge Wheel

Im brainstorming again and wanting to have a 20" or maybe a 24" wheel made for my hollow grinder. It has a 14" now and it works nice but I think the flatter but still slightly hollow grind would lend itself to the older style bowies and make good hunting knives.

Does anybody make them this big?

Bruce,Just mill out a platen with this radiuos on it and you will be set.And while you are at it do us both one with a 6 foot radious on it as this was what the antiques were done on.This is what Alex Daniels uses on some of his,He says that some of the old grinds tho look good done with a flat they are easier to do and look better with this big wheel grind.
Bruce:D

Bruce if you decide to have a wheel cast in aluminium. Consider the option of having it cast offset. That is most wheels have a rib for want of a better word that joins the center bearing housing with the outside contact area of the wheel. If you offset that rib to one side of the wheel and skim it flat you will be able to use it as a disc sander if you wanted to. A local grinder maker Jim Steel has been doing that with the 10 inch wheels.

I think he originall turned up a pattern in some other material and dropped it off at the local moulding shop.

The first knife I ever made was back in 1974, I used
a 36" stone grinding wheel on it. realy not bad to use ether.
I still have it...The knife..that is..:D

In the old days, those 5' stone wheels were pretty standand, however, it was VERY uppleasant when then came apart!!! :(

I would like a wheel at least 24" diameter. I could make a platen with the radious that will fit the Burr-king but I want to use my variable speed grinder. Maybe a 3rd grinder should go on my Christmas list.

Bruce,

Like Reg said you should be able to turn out a wooden model of what you want and then take it to the vocational school that you frequent and get someone there to cast you one. Then just true it up and center drill the hole on the lathe or mill.

edited because Icain't spll

An interesting and timely thread. I've recently heard that many if not all of the vintage sheffield and french knives were ground on 3'-6' wheels. I'm considering making/providing a large radius pyroceram lined platen to serve the same purpose, and looking for input as to what LARGE sized wheel most would prefer. Thanks guys, and all input appreciated.

Steve, I think the 5 or 6 foot platen made of the pyro type glass would sell good. IPut me on your list for a 2" by 6" one. Bruce Evans and I have talked about the platen way to go before. I still want a wheel though but dont know of anyone that can cast one. I bet it would take a really big lathe to true one up.

A horizontal lathe would be the ticket for that one. :)
if you want a few foundry names I'll check on it for you Bruce.
I got a few somewhere here, I was and still want to cast
some 154CM in porcelain molds.
I have the name of the one that does David Boyie's
cast blades for him, he farms it out now,

The other foundries pour 1500 lb's at a time.
that would be a lot of knife blades aye??:D
the length of the belt (I'd think not being standard)
will cost much more that normal on a big wheel like that

a curved platen??? maybe Rob can cook something up?
on the rotary Idea..
