Hello Axe Enthusiasts,

a few days ago, i purchased a Hultafors Axe, Model Nr.HB HY -0,85.

I bought the axe as a present for my nephew... so i thought, before I will give the axe to him, I can do a short overview ;)

Here is the test:

Myself, I use Axes from Gränsfors Bruks mostly. So, wehn I thougt about a suitable axe for my nephew, I had in mind either a GB or a Hultafors.
And since I find the fact quite appealing that the ancient Hults Bruks forge was founded 320 years ago (in 1697), i ended up with the Model HB HY -0,85.

OK, whats interesting:
On the official Hultafors Website www.hultafors.com, they generally show 2 series of hatchets and axes: the "Standard series" and the "Classic series". The "Standard series" seems to be the economy line.

The Axe that I bought (Model HB HY -0,85) is from the classic series. Exactly the same axe appears also in the Standard series: Model HY 20 -0,85.

Hultafors describes the axe as a medium-sized felling axe, for using it for small-scale felling.
Well, after testing it, i think that it is more of a Allrounder forest axe .. but not a dedicated felling axe...

What also seems quite interesting to me:
HultsBruks has been sold to the HULTAFORS Company back in 1992.
But now I find this Website www.hultsbruk1697.se , so a HULTSBRUK (!) Website. (Why that?)
Her, the axes have names. My HB HY axe is there listed as the "Kisa Axe". The head is the same, but the handle of the Kisa carries the traditional HB logo.

Myconclusion: a very nice medium sized Allrounder from Sweden.

Cheers,
Erik

Though not the same as yours, I got a Hultafors classic hunting axe a few months ago.
Nice axe in general. The steel is nice and I like the feel & shape of the axe. Holds an edge well & is easy to get razor sharp.

My example has quite poor grain orientation on the handle though, and the circle wedge is not driven straight in the middle of the handle (its off to the side/even maybe touching the metal eye of the axe) so it looses substantial points there.
Im sure its fine for a smaller axe but it still bugs me...quite a lot.

In my case I really like the head / steel. But they could have done much better with the handle. I also like the sheath it comes with. Better than the wetterlings ones.

I'm very curious as I know the heads on the classic felling axe and hunters axe are the same weight but what are differences between the two (other than handle lenght)? I'm trying to decided between both. I plan to use it camping and to clear trails for hunting. I also want it for felling smaller trees to make bow staves.

I found the classic hunters axe on Amazon.ca almost $30 (+ free shipping) cheaper than the felling axe. If you think the felling axe will better suit my needs I'll wait till I can get the same deal on it or grab the Husqvarna multi-purpose for under $100 shipped.

Thanks,
W. M.

One more question does anyone know the difference between the classic line and standard line? I know the standard line doesn't come with a sheath but other than that I'm curious if the price difference is worth waiting and going classic or if the standard will do.

Thanks again,
W. M.
