I got a few Hults Bruk heads from my dad and this is the one I worked on first, the 2 1/4lb. I took off all the blue paint, and hung it on a 28" handle (length now is 27 1/4"). He also gave me a nice 3.5lb felling axe head from Hults Bruk that will be my next project. They used to stock these at the local hardware stores, he bought the 2 1/4lb ones for $12.99 CAD each in the 80s.
Original condition wasn't that bad (my head is the blue one on the bottom, my dads its the one with the red handle, he had 2, which reminds me, I need to ask him about that red axe head...no idea what that is...):
I sanded it down, sharpened it, and hung it on a 28" handle that I got from Canadian Tire. The handle was so thick it was like a club, so I had to sand down the handle on the sides to make it more manageable. It also took some time to fit the head into the handle as this was my first time shaving down a handle.
I soaked the head in Boiled Linseed Oil for 3 days after I hung it, and coated the axe handle with the oil 3 times a day for a few days. I can still see the oil trying to seep out the top!
(I literally went through 15 handles to get this grain and finally found one I was happy with, they aren't the highest quality handles at Canadian tire!)
Here's the sheath I made for it, I wanted something rustic looking, something maybe a woodsman would have on his back in the day. So no metal fixings at all, the hardest part was the strap and how to secure the sheath with no metal, finally had a light bulb moment and this was the result!
Thanks guys!
