How do these axes compare to similar pricepoint axes from Council? I'm looking at the Council FSS and Velvicut too and wonder about the steel versus 1080 and 5160.

TIA,
Sid

I only have an old HB hatchet, do can't really compare, but I really like my Council Tool regular boys axe. I'm kinda frugal, so price played a part. The seller Omaha Knife provided a no cost handle replacement when mine broke.

My experience with the HB Agdor Montreal vs the FSS:

Velvicut and FSS are, when you're swinging them, basically the same axe. My experience has been that the FSS handles are thinner from the factory than the Velvicut, and the HB the thickest yet. You could probably get away without thinning the FSS---but I thinned mine, so of course I also thinned the other two.

Steel: all seem pretty comparable. I guess in principle 5160 should be slightly tougher than 1080 at the same hardness, but that hasn't translated to any noticeable difference in use with regard to how hard they are to keep sharp. I've also been very happy with the HB steel. The edge on my Agdor is very thin and I have had no problem with rolling or dulling even when cutting quite hard wood.

To me, the decision would come down to what you want in terms of weight and geometry. I've been really impressed with the 2.5# Montreal, and I'd bet the 2.75# Yankee pattern that HB has just started selling (in the US, at least) is also very nice. But for 2.25#, well, the boy's axe is a classic for a reason!
