I am not going to say it look pretty but I haven't cut it down all the way yet. There is about a half inch of wood above the eye. I couldn't get any of the other pics to turn out. I will retake them tomorrow. The handle is straight and not turned. IE: the ovalness of the handle aligns with the head. Grain is straight. I just want to check that it will be okay with the eye looking like this. I think it will be fine when trimmed because the splitting is above the top of the head. THANKS!!!

Look perfectly usable. It's not what I would call a 'huge' sledge. I reserve that term for hammers of at least 16 pounds. 20 pounders are pretty big. 30 pounders are huge. As a young buck - no bullsh!t - I used to be able to swing a 20 pounder - full round house swings - with one hand. I was full o' piss & vinegar back in those days. Busted a lot of concrete.

Thanks, Square_peg! This is actually for a neighbor and I didn't want him to have any problems with flying heads! I "broke" the old handle while helping him but the more I thought about it, the more I decided that the handle had bad grain alignment. I had two halves of handle, one with the head on it. I think you would agree with me. He had wanted a fiberglass handle but I don't trust the epoxy like I trust a wood wedge. I will bash on this one a little before I give it back.

I seem to remember seeing people say to soak the head and new handle in a bucket of water overnight. Do you recommended that?

Looks fine. 80 grit on the belt sander will smooth the wood and metal down nicely.
