A friend knows I like to refurbish axes and hatchets, he gave me this head that he bought on his last "antique shop" visit on his vacation. Wondering if anyone can identify the head it is 1 1/4 lb, and says "Made in W Germany". I am guessing it's a dime a dozen type hatchet? Thanks

You've stumbled into one of the bigger mysteries I think. Here is another thread about these axes. Good job on the hatchet btw, it looks great!

Nice job of cleaning it up. The stamp means it was well worth resurrecting. Jerry have always tried very hard not to compromise on quality, despite losing the war and entirely having to start all over again. Rough finish suggests to me late 40s early 50s, and head shape plus English text; for n. American export.
This is entirely a guess but if such a head had been stamped Mauser, Krupp, Messerschmidt, Daimler, Bavarische Motor Werke or any such at the time they might not have sold very many, and yet many of these once proud companies had to make do with making inexpensive cutlery, pots and pans, cheese graters (and maybe axes) etc for quite a few years.

I have one in the 5lb weight and was told it was an ATCO. No idea where you could verify that though.

I have an older Wiebelhaus & Co (says Made In Germany instead of West Germany) with the Wiebelhaus stamp. When I was cleaning it I found traces of blue paint.
