I have this hunka hunka metal, from an air hammer I believe. It's 15" X 1 3/4' dia @ the round end and 1 1/8" @ the hex end. I'm curious whether you guys think this might be made into a hawk or two? Or, since I don't really know what the metal is, am I tilting at windmills here?

Any of you hawkmakers wanna take a crack at this hunka hunka metal for me? I bought this for a couple of bucks at a garage sale so I'm not terribly financially committed at this point.

Syn: That hunk of steel is from a jack hammer rig and is probably harder than a harlot's heart. You might want to reconsider. On the other hand, if you can locate a guy with a desire for a serious project...go for it. A master smith could do it although you'd have to cough up some considerable dinero.

It may well be an S series steel, but there are other options, too. Being 1 3/4 diameter, there will be considerable time in taking a small piece and making a hawk. You could get a lot more than 2 out of it. A 1 lb ball pien makes a great hawk. Figure how many pounds your piece weighs. That should give you an idea of how many hawks it's good for.

Good luck, you have your work cut out for you.

"Good luck, you have your work cut out for you."

Air hammer/jack hammer what do I know?

Haaaaaaaaaaaa. I'M NOT GONNA BEAT THE CRAP OUTTA THIS. I live in the big city where a forge might be frowned on by less then tolerant neighbors (hell the cops would be here in a short time I'm sure!). Besides I have a rotator cuff problem from years ago that precludes me pounding the crap out of most anything including golf balls.

I was wondering if using this for a hawk or hawks was a worthwhile project. It sounds like it could be used but why go thru the pain....................... when there are much softer and easier materials cheaply available. I see hammers and axes at garage/estate sales all the time for a couple of bucks.

I will just toss it in the back of the garage for now unless someone really wants to have it as a gift. If you do email me
